Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

(surprised me as my spend on it has been quite low in last 6 months) and they said changes to annual fee and earn rate are ONLY for new card members.

I'm not convinced that the earn rate won't change, but am very happy to have been given 59k point to keep it in a year.
I received a letter in the mail a few weeks ago from Amex saying my Velocity Platinum card changes to the new points earn rates and $375 annual fee from October 3rd.

Got 23k for Explorer. Spent about 50k on it over the year.

Any examples of retention bonuses for the Platinum Edge?

I thought so too but they didn't seem to be offering anything higher. Mentioned I could add a supplementary card holder for another 5000 though.

I thought about playing hardball and calling back but the card is essentially free with the Travel Credit and this is my first year as a customer so I took it.

My Edge and my partner's Explorer have minimal spend on them so it will be interesting to see what they offer on those.

From what has been reported in this thread i think max was 50k then 44k, 36k, 30k without having to re-read the whole thread. I think the 50k was from a business amex? anyhow most people have just taken the first offer, only 1 person that i remember has reported in this thread to re-negoiate and they have gotten more.

For those who have been recently offered points to keep a card, how long did they take to post? I was given points a few months ago which I think posted almost instantly, I was offered points earlier this week and haven't seen them yet...

Mine took about 30 hours or so.

I received 15k (platinum charge) + 15k (platinum reserve) = 30k

They gave me two options initially.
1. Downgrade to Green card.
2. 15k points for platinum charge.

I told them I can apply the charge chard with my professional body and it only has an annual fee of 950 as opposed to 1200. Then they offered me points on my Reserve as well.

My annual spending on my cards was 2k per month.

What could I have done better?
Since my annual fee is coming up in a few days, I should have called earlier got the points first. It could be possible for me to transfer the points to my new card since I am still an AmEx member?

Points posted today, about 3 days after call without follow up from me. Going to try and cancel my Plat Edge soon, but waiting for a point transfer to Mrs Mac before doing it

I got about 100k pts on Velocity Amex. Only used for Uber, so probably spent few hundred a year on it. Have a few other amex cards (personal and charge cards) which gets used heavily. Called up with no ulterior motives but to cancel card. Operator was in the process of cancelling then asked if I wanted to keep it for 100k pts which shocked me.

Missus called up to cancel Velocity plat card 2 weeks later and was offered nothing.

If you call up to cancel every other card you should also be offered the 100k points. It seems to be based on your overall relationship/the card that gets the most use which kind of explain my Reserve which would be lucky to have 2k through it ended up with 36k points along with the Edge and Plat charge.

I'd be interested in figuring out what the factors are to get the higher retention offers like aggregate spend targets across all accounts and/or number of products, etc.
My spend has increased this year with my concerted effort to concentrate as much spending as possible on Amex.

I think the type of spend may probably affect your overall value to Amex as well, different merchant runs with different rates which ultimately affect Amex's income generated by your account.

Indeed. One could imagine say a large spend by some buying say GCs through Woolworths. But Woolworths have probably screwed Amex on fees paid. So revenue to Amex will actually be low.

I have the DJ Amex card and have had it for about 3 months. Only hit the minimum spend to get the 40000 points sign on bonus (although just added a Supplementary holder to get another 5000 points). If I was to ring up to cancel, what do you reckon my odds are of getting anything and how much if any?

Quite low, but do report back.

I got 25k a few weeks ago. Very minimal spend on it. Said I wanted to close it down to take up other banks bonus offer on new cards.
