Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Given the sign-on bonus' of 100K available, referral bonus offers etc - then on an 18 month cycle (cancel 2 Amex & take out non-Amex 90K-100K sign-on elsewhere) - unless you're getting an amount like mentioned above (100k) - getting the points does not really seem to stack up UNLESS you are maxing out your 'sign-up ability' elsewhere (=marginal credit score).

Or am I missing something obvious?
That's the way I see it.

Also closed my Explorer and no bonus points offered. They could also tell I have a Charge on my Explorer account even though I created two different sign-ups and ticked 'no' for being current Amex cardholder. Was offered 36k to keep my Charge a few months ago. So unsure if this played a part in being offered no incentives.

Amex Plat Charge Card and Amex Rewards Advantage Charge Card (no longer availaalbe) RA Card Ive held for at leasdt 15 years - I was never entitled to a 100000 Bonus when signing up for the Platinum Charge Card because I held/hold a current Amex card

Normal rule is you can only get sign-up points if you do not already have TWO of that type of card - so can get bonus for new Amex Velocity CC if holding 2 charge cards, or if hold 2 Amex issued credit cards then can get sign-up bonus on bank issued Amex ccs.

There is not one right answer for this, as each of us have different circumstances and values. My thoughts on this are at 18 Month wait for new promos?

For my situation cancelling my Explorer/Edge combination and waiting 18 months to sign on again would cost me both points, $$$$ and ease of redemption on my preferred airlines in the pointy end.

No, that WAS the normal rule. Apart from DJ Amex having an Amex now disqualifies you from getting sign on points for a different Amex.

Terms now tends to be:

. Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any other Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer. Previous and existing bank-issued American Express companion cardholders are eligible for this offer (cards issued by: Australia New Zealand Banking Group Limited, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, National Australia Bank, Westpac Banking Corporation.

Thx Ill take note of this and if I apply for a non Amex issued card should expect bonus points

See post 586 for sign on boni for Amex issued cards.

Non Amex issued Amexs are completely separate and so yes you would gain the boni. But as always for each and every offer read the fine print to see what you are eligible for.

Interested to know experiences or speculations on whether we can get additional retention bonus for the Business Explorer. On top of the published 50k retention bonus points, I wonder if we can get more out of them. If we cannot then it’s probably better to go with the Personal Explorer where we can get retention bonus and travel credit.

50k Bonus Pts is for once only. I have spent over 300k on Biz Explorer, can confirm that.

I wouldn't be so sure about that retention bonus for standard explorer.

I see.
How about the Business Platinum Charge, what sort of points were you getting out of that one?

Thanks.
I was with a high end plat charge card spender the other day he was offered only 5k i think the big offers are dead in the water i think i will be cancelling this card as i have the plat biz.

25k for Velocity Platinum. Don't spend much on it, but spend a fair bit on my other Amex cards. Doesn't really seem worth it to me For $375.

Do you guys say "I'd like to cancel my card" and see what they offer or just straight up ask what can they offer so you don't cancel the card?

Now if the answer is you ask to cancel - what do you do if they say ok without offering anything?

I'm going to try regarding my edge card but don't actually want to cancel it so just wondering how I should play the call.

Just call and ask for any bonuses for keeping the card though unless you spend a bit on the edge they prob wont care.
The big bonuses seem to have dried up this year

Rang Friday, spend $2 to 7k/month. Offered 10K points for VFF Plat Amex.

Said no thanks. Virgin Money 120,000 VFF points for $3,000/month for 3 months beckons!
Filled in online and approved Monday.
Now for the card to arrive to chalk up the 1st required spend.
