Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

If I do this, and they don't offer me anything worthwhile, and I then cancel the card, will they refund the fee? Either the whole fee of pro-rata?

Annual fee can only be refunded within 30 days of it being charged, according to Amex. No pro-rata refund (unless you switch to a fee-free product first, then cancel).

Thanks for the advice and confirming what I thought. So I'm thinking I'll wait until the fee is charged, then ring up straight away to cancel and see what they will offer me to keep it. If the offer is not worthwhile, I'll cancel within 30 days as you suggest.

Called twice, first month before nothing offered other than a downgrade to a free card. Second call on the date of the renewal. Same as before, no offer for any bonus.

Platinum edge used regularly

Another data point;
I just called to genuinely cancel my amex business charge card....would not have kept it unless I was offered crazy amount of points given the $1500 fee. Spend on it was only about 15K. Was not offered anything whatsoever, which didn't bother me the slightest.

has anyone used their plat charge credit then cancelled and got the fee refunded

I called to cancel my Explorer about a week before annual fee would've been charged. I've put through roughly $40k on this card. Was offered 15k points to stay which I accepted. Otherwise I would have cancelled.

I'm noticing that people here are reporting how much they spend on the card but not the length of years they've held the card - I wonder if this may have something to do with a (retention) bonus?

FYI-I canceled my Edge card on Sunday, been with AMEX since 2009, and spent $105K on edge last year, offered nothing.

It's time for me to start doing credit card churning, I did calculation about that, seems I get better off on sign on bonus from different cards instead of staying with AMEX.

I have been saying this for sometime. Yet there are a long list of naysayers on this forum that suggest strongly otherwise.

This makes no sense when applied to my situation. Been with AMEX since 2008, spent less than $30,000 on the card this year and was offered 30,000 points to keep it.

Agreed, so long as you aren't flagged by the banks during the application process as a credit risk.

Called Amex, only 1 lot of points can be offered per year per MR account. As all my cards are linked to the same MR account, I've got the retention points credited in early Jan this year so I can't get another lot till that time has passed and looks like only 1 lot of points will be credited.

Thanks for providing that information, that kind of explains the change that we've seen in AMEX issuing retention bonuses recently. I'd be interested to hear if anyone has had a different experience to this recently.

The CSR’s definitely mention this in their spiel “because of your xx years of loyalty” but doubt it gets included in the algorithm going by some of the experiences

Fully intend to cancel all of my AMEX cards this month.

But just for fun I thought I'd see if there was anything on offer.

Have spent $100K+ through my AMEX Explorer card in the last year. Annual fee due next week.

Told that there were no offers at all. Offered a downgrade to a fee free card which I laughed at. Asked to speak to the retention team. Told that there was no such thing.

Cancelled card.

Have a DJ AMEX to cancel as well. Will try the same routine in the next few days. But by the end of the month I expect to be AMEX free and waiting out the 18 month exclusions period.

I am close to serving my probation so hoping for some increased sign up bonuses in the new year.

We are pretty in the same boat on the reaction from AMEX.

I was glad I didn't get a reaction from AMEX. It may have made my choice more difficult. But as soon as they said no fee reduction and no points for staying it was an instant sayonara from me

Doesn't the biz accelerator have a $160 annual fee?
