Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Yeah left my run too late to play that game unfortunately.
Should reinforce that I cancelled 30 days after my annual fee posted with the guarantee that it would be refunded in full as I hadn't used the current years travel credit. I don't think that any other credit card provider offers this.

Most will actually do this. NAB will do a pro rata refund, so you could cancel 3 months in and only pay for what you've used.

Rang up to do the cancellation dance for Plat Charge, rang the main number, selected 3 for Card Enquiries and 6 for Cancellations.

When I asked if there were any retention offers the rep said we'd need to start the cancellation process to confirm whether any were available. She assured me the process could be stopped without actually cancelling.

Bot suggested 100k MR or a downgrade, I said I'd think about it and call back. She said the offer may change from call to call so it might change again when I next call.

This is my first renewal on the Plat. Avg 20-25k per month spend.

I got nothing for my second renewal. First renewal I was given 20,000 MR. Whenever I tried to cancel my card, I always had the same person who offered me 20L from my first renewal.

I was only offered 20,000 points.... yikes compared to others here... I don't plan to cancel card thought I'd get some freebie points. But a little bit disappointed with the offer... maybe it's because of the relatively low spend (4-5k) p/m because covid.

Just as a data point - I removed my direct debits, reduced my MR balance from 650k to 150k, waited a few weeks and called back. Offer remained the same, 100k.

So i am looking at doing the cancellation dance again, this time with my Plat card.

Just a question on my MR points balance, what happens to the points if i do go ahead and cancel?

It's worth asking the rep before starting the cancellation process (so it forms part of your recorded conversation) but when I asked, I was told I'd have 30 days to do something with them otherwise they'd be lost.

If you hold other MR earning cards or are downgrading to another MR card (Explorer, Edge, etc) I believe the balance will remain against that card but you will lose the ability to transfer to QF.

25K offered to retain Plat Edge - junked it. Bye Amex and good riddance, see you in 18 (or is it 12?) months when you have a good sign up again!

It’s 18 months so a long time to be in the wilderness from Amex but why not if it’s worth your while to do so.
