Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

I had Similar, Was a Velocity Gold/Platinum customer for 11 years as the offers/benefits made it worth it, but it hasn't so much for me these days. Hadn't spent much the past year while i churned other cards so it's not to surprising but i rang through and wasn't offered anything after cancelling, except to downgrade. Will come back in a year or so and just churn!

4 years Platinum charge, annual fee posted, called around 11am AWST, transferred to (I believe) Australian call centre. Asked to cancel, cited SQ deval and concierge app. Didn't go through the actual cancellation process as offered 200k MR points quite quickly to stay. Accepted, whole convo took about 3 minutes.

Did this last year too (think I only got 100k MR points though).

Was your intention to cancel related to fees due in soon

Not sure whether I can use the same approach for fees paid last year

You can't. I think there's a 30 day grace period for Amex annual fees - you can cancel the card within 30 days of the AF posting, and get the fee refunded.

You're better off waiting until your AF is approaching this year and having the conversation then.

I had luck last year calling after the annual fee, about 2 months after.

That call is due again in about 2 months from today

200K would be nice

Just called to cancel the charge and to check if any points were being offered on the system.. got nothing.

2022 - 100k
2023 - 30k
2024 - 0

Sad, if it werent for the plat reserve card, i'd let this card go.

Got offered 30K points which I accepted. Avg. spend $6000 per month. I called at 10am and spoke with an Aussie bloke. I thought my fee was renewing this month but it was actually renewing late June. I wonder if my calling too early or before the fee posted had anything to do with not getting a higher offer.

Called them late last week after the AF was already posted. Nothing offered, even after pushing for a cancellation - but ended the call saying I'll make a decision on my points and call back again to cancel. I have a few more days to decide.

FWIW, I also have the extra $400 Reserve travel credit.

Rang today and spoke to agent offshore. Business platinum. Was asked reason for cancelling and when i told him it was due to krisflyer devaluation he said that's the first time he has heard that. Spend around $150kpa. No incentive offered to stay and didn't ask for one as was happy to cancel.

I called today and got an offshore agent. The agent immediately proceeded to read the 'mandatory statement' about all outstanding amounts still due etc, there was no dance.

I will try the suggestion to get a different team and call during business hours.

Platinum Charge Card Annual Fee posted about a week ago.

Contacted via the chat function about 8pm on a weekday, nothing offered.
Called the following day about 9pm, nothing offered (spoke to someone offshore)
Called on a weekday about 12pm, nothing offered (spoke to an Australian who had the least interest of all the interactions in helping)
Contacted via the chat on the weekend about 9am, 200,000 MR points offered.

The chat agent that eventually offered them took quite a lot of prodding. She wanted me to call up but after asking a couple of times if she was sure there was nothing she could do herself to address the matter she offered to "check my account"

As best I can tell, your best chance might be to use the chat function and keep prodding and probing but absolutely don't utter the phrase "annual fee", just complain about the lack of benefits.

Mind if I asking what`s your annual spend on the card?
