AMEX not accepted or surcharge

I bought some new fast shoes today from the local running store, asked if they took AMEX was advised that's a negative as they would incur 3.6% fee on it, but that they took VISA / MC as they only charged 0.70 %, how ever the guy gave me 10% off the shoes as I was a member of a running group.
Afterwards headed to the local Donut King outlet, got a skinny cappuccino (got to watch my figure) & 2 donuts & low and be hold they took AMEX.
Go figure.

Maybe there is a lot of dough in Donuts

I went to Misty's Diner in Melbourne last week, they wanted 5% surcharge for Amex. Paid with MasterCard with no surcharge. I think that is a bit high considering they are unlikely to cop that rate from Amex.

When i was in the USA i had no issue using my american express card at all. I came back to Australia and my local IGA's has stopped taking them. What has amex done to get them back on board? NOTHING.

I've travelled to the USA on holiday several times a year for 20 years and find it near impossible to use Amex anywhere except larger Hotels, larger restaurants, airlines and major stores. So your comments bear no relation to small town USA - IMHO.

I shop at IGA Supermarket Castlecrag each week, and use my Amex with no issue and no surcharge.

The Australian Frequent Flyer Shop does not accept AMEX. Does somebody need to read this thread about taking business away from shops not accepting AMEX?

Am travelling in UK & Scotland at the moment & only 1 knock back on Amex at the Cairndow Inn. Absolutely every else no probe & about surcharge - What's a surcharge??

Amex acceptance around London is patchy and surcharges (or mininum amounts) are common.

Mal I just used 28degrees and Citi Select Visa this time as an Australian Amex in London gets a pretty ordinary exchange rate conversion. With Citi Select at least the 5 Citi Rewards points partially neutralizes the 3.3% fee you get smacked with each time.

Our local IGA supermarket has no surcharge for Amex. However the self serve lanes do not allow Amex yet all the other lanes take Amex

I got hit with a 2% surcharge last night at our local Chinese take away, for using VISA/MC.... Last time I will be going there... Amex sticker in the window, on the counter and on a their bill folders, yet they don't a accept it.

Is this by any chance a certain restaurant in Joondalup? If so, I was stung the same way.

Yeah, you gotta love that. How many restaurants do I visit that are more than happy to use the amex 'folder' for presenting the bill yet don't actually accept Amex.

@moopere

i cannot agree more.

All the time I walked into a restaurant thinking they accept Amex with no surcharge because they hang all the lovely stickers and door hangers on their door.

Probably already mentioned but 1.5% for ALL credit cards at Parmelia Hilton Perth. WTF.

Flat fee CC charge is fairly common now in most Australian hotels chains - Hilton, Hyatt, IHG. Lucky you were not at a Rydges - they charge 3.5% for Amex....

Slightly OT but I just got off the phone to AMEX wanting to cancel my Qantas Business card. No longer good value IMHO @ $299pa.

Buzz, you've been such a good customer I was told by Ben, we can give you a $250.00 discount for the next 12 months. That makes the card just $49. OK, I'll keep it and ring again next year.

Paraburdoo Lunch Bar charges 4% on Mastercard, Visa and AMEX. Amazing what having no competition and a large majority of work based travellers will do.

Just rang one of my suppliers on the off chance they take payments by credit card.

Answer - YES. But there is a 2% fee if over $100. Huh:confused:

When I said I should ring every time I get an invoice (assuming under $100) she laughed.
