AMEX not accepted or surcharge

I have one of each near me, but since I use 5% discounted WISH cards it is a bit irrelevant except for the fact that the WISH Gateway stopped taking Amex!!!

Interesting email yesterday..

So recently I filled in the takeamex form for a restaurant I got an automated email reply from them yesterday to say they will talk with the merchant and get back to me. (I will paraphrase this so as not to give away any info), not even 5 mins later I get an email from an Amex Acc Manager (not an automated one) with my name and email address (obviously a copy paste error from when they were looking at my restaurant complaint) asking if I was still looking at buying a car from a particular European car dealer in Sydney and that amex may be able to reduce the fee % for this one transaction only, and asking for who they were dealing with at the dealership.

So if you have a big purchase planned and the merchant is charging a high % it might be worth taking the time to go through the Take AMEX process to see if any better can be done.

Thanks for the tip. Am about to pull the trigger on a new motorcycle, about $30k so this could make a difference. :)

As this dealer has an online presence for parts offering Paypal payment my other tactic was to ask if I could pay by Paypal, linked of-course to an Amex card. ;)

I would be really interested to know what the discounted merchant fee is for Amex for these one-offs, I have used Signature (now Prestige) for a number of prestige car purchases in the last couple of years and would gladly use Amex if the fee was reasonable. Not sure it would be as low as the .9% that the dealer charges me though.

it's not unheard of for Amex to do this although in the past usually just for Centurions of High Value customers - unfortunately the dealer then will probably end up in their acceptance listings when they are really only a one off :(

In 2010 was able to purchase a car at our local Audi dealer with Amex centurion. We paid a small fee to use it. It was more than offset by the points and then the claim on Amex Ace insurance damaging the car (wheel mag) within first three months. It was about 2700 for a straight for a new mag wheel.

What do you mean? I just bought some through everydaygiftcards.com.au which took Amex. wishgiftcards.com.au redirects to the same site. Not sure which WISH Gateway you're talking about?

I tested the NRMA (for car owners in NSW & ACT, equivalent of RACV RACQ RAA RAC RACT) 5% off Wish card, which actually is a redirection back to Woolworths web site, so 3 point per $1.

Good news, it looks like all the auto club portals have been replaced with a generic redirect to the WISH portal which does accept Amex :). RACQ used to have their own clunky portal which, a few weeks ago, binned Amex from the payment options.

Still free shipping?

It seems to be, although I haven't ordered yet since I don't need any. It said, "free shipping is currently applied to your order", or something like that, but then on the same page it mentioned $5.50 for shipping, but the total amount didn't include the $5.50. When I actually order, I will report back.

I'm a convert to the egift cards which work everywhere except caltex.
Feel less likely to lose and arrive more quickly.
I tend to store the numbers, pin and balance as contacts on my phone.
I can always buy a plastic one using the ecard at the till if mixed with other shopping

Yes, I stocked up when they were 7.5 % off. I do though also have a physical gift card for the Caltex stores that don't accept.

I suspect you have answered my question already.
Today I paid for fuel at my usual Celtic, scanned my EDR and Myer One card. Then swiped my NAB Amex. Only to be told , forthwith Amex transactions will attract a 2.5% surcharge.
My question is ( before I throw my hands in the air and start shopping at BP for Velocity rewards) is there a "Gift Card" I can buy that will work at Caltex?

I believe you should be looking for WISH cards. Ideally through an entertainment book as that portal allows amex and gets you 5% off. I suspect that you will need the physical card and not an e-gift card, but I'll leave that for others to confirm.
