AMEX not accepted or surcharge

Was at the Watsons Bay Hotel last night, went to buy some drinks and was told it was a 2% surcharge for ALL credit cards.

I was floored.

I told her that was poor. Obviously not her fault no I wasn't rude about it.

Not sure if it is because I was over in the States for 6 months and i could use Amex everywhere, but acceptance seems lower since I got back?

I believe that would mean a big reduction in points earning on credit cards

That's different to the fee charged by Visa/MC/etc. for the transaction, right? (Which is on top of, and separate, to the bank fees)

You could be right. It specifies that it's the fees that the banks can charge so I guess the vendor can still charge whatever they want.

There are businesses out there that make only 5.5% on what they sell, 5% + GST. When Amex want to slug them as much as 2.5% is it any wonder they don't take Amex or any credit card? We as consumers always want the best price but then complain when we have to pay cash or use a debit card so the vendor can make a few lousy bucks. As a business owner I know how difficult retail can be at times.

We travelled to the US earlier this year and yep, Amex was welcome everywhere, and also no surcharges on ANY credit card at any hotel we stayed at. Haven't stayed in a hotel in Australia for a couple of years and have made a couple of hotel bookings in NSW for September - I was staggered to find that every place I checked accommodation prices for charged at least 2% on all credit cards (and usually higher for Amex of course). All the airlines charge CC fees of course, but is this the norm for accommodation now as well?

On surcharges - my beloved swiped the amex for parking before work yesterday... $10 parking fee, no signage on surcharge, got slugged with 80c - told him to snap some pics tomoz and we'll report. ACCC or Amex or both?

Also - just confirming entertainment book accepts amex? Went to purchase a membership and only had MC/Visa as options.

Both imo

entertainment book does not, but the wish card portal via entertainment book does.

Interesting that the Amex Connect website lists a particular local store as accepting Amex, when in fact attempting to use your Amex gets an error. Lodged a report with Take Amex to see what happens.

Just out of curiosity does anyone know if restaurants who are amex merchants automatically get amex bill holders, do they buy them or are they only given to merchants to win business?

We run an online dog clothing business and through my payment gateway we chose to accept Amex. I have nothing to do with restaurants but was still able to get Amex branded things like refresher towels, bill holders, pen holders, stickers and decals and stuff posted out to me free of charge! I don't even have a shop front LOL!
