AMEX not accepted or surcharge

Amex surcharge of 3.5% at Terra Rossa where we had our AFF Christmas get together last night.

I tried to negotiate that one when I booked but unfortunately they were firm on that one. They did however forget to charge it on the deposit I paid.

Bailed on the purchase of a computer at JB, because they were happy to price match but not waive the Amex fee.

Through an affinity scheme I get 10% off for DJ. So any electronic purchase (especially pre-o/s) I normally go to DJ's (operating as a Dick Smith) with my proof of price for each item - and get them to price match.

Currently with the 10% off Big W e-giftcard promotion (via cashrewards etc) you could quite likely get JB HiFi gcs (check to see they stock them but I think they do).

So buy them today, normally they take 2 days to get the email to you and then you've got your 10% off and price match if it works for you.

Big W via cash rewards accepts Amex with no surcharge.

I am new to Amex. I just received the Platinum Charge Card. So can i now expect to pay a 3.5% premium whenever i use it?

No. Many businesses accpet Amex without surcharge. 3.5% is probably the highest surcharge you will see. Your choice to accept it or walk away and report the business to Amex.

Card surcharge gouging will be gone next year anyway with the new laws that are coming in. There will doubtless still be some surcharging but it can only be the exact cost to the merchant.

Think of it as an international transaction fee for domestic purchases.

I must say that since using Amex, my choice of retailers has changed.
The business lost by not accepting me as a customer outweighs the costs of card acceptance.

No doubt many feel the same way.

FWIW in last 15yrs in current business have never had AMEX facility and rarely asked for it - can categorically say have not missed 1 sale by not accepting AMEX on rare occasions question asked - also never have nor never will charge customers Merchant Fee for Visa/MC. Our MF for Visa is flat .65% and MC flat .73%.

Went to McDs the other day near me...told they don't accept it?? Tried Amex edge and velocity...wasn't too pleased so didn't proceed with order.

In Australia? I've never seen an Australian McDonald's that didn't accept Amex...

Yep I actually know if another here in Melbourne. (East link) that says their terminals hadn't had the software loaded...2 years after opening.i did report to Amex but clearly they didn't care.

Kentucky fried on the other hand is not accepting AMEX for sure. However is it all KFC?

I thought most Melbourne Maccas accepted AMEX, especially considering they had a statement credit offer this or last year. KFC none for me.

Father's main dentist who accepts AMEX, was on holidays when he needed some urgent treatment. Backup dentist only takes MC/VISA. Bit of extra pain on top of the two teeth that were taken out.

I'm loving the newer CBA terminals that show the accepted card logos on the PayWave screen... a few businesses that at first were only accepting Visa/MC have since signed up for AMEX but don't display any card decals anywhere else, so it's a nice surprise to whip out the Visa, almost tap it, see the AMEX logo pop up and change cards to earn more points. :D

On the other hand, the local Subway has changed EFTPOS terminals (which usually means it has also changed owners) and even though the AMEX logo is still on the door and shows up on the EFTPOS screen (ANZ), it wasn't working... reported that one to AMEX!
