AMEX not accepted or surcharge

Have been to several BP service stations with the recent "spend $40, get $10 back" Amex offer, and all have had an Amex surcharge (which is one of the reasons I don't usually go to BP). Our local Caltex Woolworths (Starmart) introduced an Amex surcharge several years ago, so I rarely go there any more either.

That's unlucky. None of the BPs I use surcharge.

One Caltex Woolworths (Starmart) that I use does surcharge but then I generally use WISH GCs there anyway.

I avoid refueling at Caltex and BP in my area due to the AMEX surcharge. Shell has no such surcharge so I go there instead.

The BP in East Perth on East Parade (just south of the Graham Farmer Freeway interchange) did not charge me an Amex surcharge when I redeemed one of my BP statement credits last week.

Bit far away from me, I'm in the northern suburbs . BPs at Greenwood and Balcatta both charge Amex surcharges. BP Innaloo (on Scarborough Beach Rd) didn't last time I was there, but that was about 6 months ago, so not sure whether that's changed since.

Yeah, 3% in an Amex bill folder.

i recently went to the Cuckoo in the Dandenongs. AMEX bill folder accompanied by "sorry sir we don't accept AMEX!"

it's always irked me that NRMA didn't accept Amex, but i have just noticed that they now accept payments thru Paypal. Yay! can now pay on Amex via paypal.

Thanks for the background opusman - I have been a PayPal user for well over a decade, but don't recall seeing Amex as an option until 2013.

BP at Marmion Ave (Ocean Reef) no surcharge there, but their fuel price is usually higher than elsewhere locally.

This. Note for Amex issued cards, AusPost is classified as government spend so only 0.5ppd.

Australia Post accepts it for most of its own products and services (excluding things like money orders for which no credit cards are accepted), but external billers (e.g. those via Postbillpay) can choose not to have it accepted as they'd have to cover the cost - that's why some billers that accept payments via Aus Post will permit Visa or MasterCard but not AMEX/Diners. Most will accept PayPal though if you pay online.

The trick with paying with AMEX at AusPost in person is that neither the contactless or the chip works (likely as the post office is too lazy to update the software to make it work), so the fastest way is to just insert the card, wait for it to fail and then swipe it.
