AMEX not accepted or surcharge

I once paid a Virgin Australia flight with paypal, I expected it would take cash off my Amex but took cash off my MC.

You have to be very careful of every screen in the PayPal system to ensure it lists the correct payment method you wish to use.
PayPal'a preference is existing balance -> Bank account -> Visa/Master ->Amex so as to reduce their own costs I expect.
If you have MasterCard and Amex set up in PayPal, watch it carefully (there is a small "change" link) and make sure it's set to Amex.
Either that or remove all other payment options from your account, except Amex.

But around Adelaide Shell is usually 10c but up to 25c dearer than most servos. I have a card to get 10c per litre off but still their diesel is too dear when compared with WW 4c off.

Indeed. I maintain zero balance in my Paypal account because I don't sell anything on Ebay and never accept Paypal for other sales. I don't have a bank account linked and my Amex is set as my default credit card.

I avoid refueling at Caltex and BP in my area due to the AMEX surcharge. Shell has no such surcharge so I go there instead.

Shell was $0.21cpl more expensive than the Liberty directly across the road. The Library charges 3.5% for Amex so i just used my Visa.

BP at Marmion Ave (Ocean Reef) no surcharge there, but their fuel price is usually higher than elsewhere locally.

That's another reason why I rarely go to BP - they can be anywhere between 10-20 cents higher than the other brands in our area. Even with something like the Amex offer, I'll only go to BP if their price is reasonable and I don't have to go much out of my way, otherwise it's just not worth it.

Very surprised recently at NewsLink at the airports. Amex has it as a 'Local Champion', yet they don't even accept AMEX anymore (they accept Diners though!).

I cant think of anywhere else that takes DC but not Amex..and with both cards I do look

weird. had a similar experience in Brizvegas - local champion and shop small but 'sorry we don't accept AMEX'...didn't ask about Diners..expected a similar result

it's always irked me that NRMA didn't accept Amex, but i have just noticed that they now accept payments thru Paypal. Yay! can now pay on Amex via paypal.

Thanks KLN. I wasn't aware that NRMA now take Paypal until I read this today. I just logged in and still didn't see a Paypal option, even though it shows Visa, Mastercard & Paypal. I've just phoned NRMA and was told you can only pay with Paypal when renewing a policy and that it has to be a 12 month policy - not when you pay monthly. Our car insurance is due in early April and I have just had it changed to be an annual policy and I now see the Paypal option. Our House and Contents policy does not expire until December so I will have to wait until then to pay with Paypal. It's disappointing that you can't just change the Direct Debit details from the Visa card I currently use to Paypal but maybe that could change in the future.

I'm sure if NRMA really wanted to allow pay by the month to be charged through PayPal that should be possible too - Belong have the ability to charge my account once a month. I guess debit everyone on the same day every month would be easier than based on an user specific debit/anniversary date.

Roll'd don't take Amex as I found out a couple days ago.
Being new to Amex I'm slowly learning which stores don't take Amex thanks to personal experience and this thread.

It is a constant battle keeping up! The two Roll'd stores I use take AMEX. One in Edward St BNE and another in the David Jones foodcourt in BNE city. I did notice a former AMEX friendly store (Mad Mex), also in the David Jones foodcourt, no longer accepts AMEX :( Sort of means they have lost my patronage for now...

Ahh thanks, perhaps it is franchisee dependent is to whether they decide to take Amex? I'm going to look around my local food stores at work to see which takes Amex, when I decide to buy lunch at work that is ;)
