AMEX not accepted or surcharge

I've begun to notice small companies/businesses that never used to charge for AMEX are now doing so. Has anyone else noticed this trend (outside of those listed in this thread)?

Yep certainly have. Several have quoted the "new regulations" that allow them to do it.

The ACCC has really only succeeded in making a poor situation worse. And they're refusing to enforce it.

Likely nobody has noticed or cared enough about it to complain - but when the ACCC found Jetstar and Virgin Australia were doing similar at one point regarding other fees and charges, legal action was taken in regards to 'drip pricing', which sounds an aweful lot like what Rex does.

Just checked REX web site. It does mention all the surcharges right below the headline prices, and there are 2 payment methods which does not attract surcharges - cash at airport or cash at headquarter (which are stupid. who does that?). They are are walking on the line?

I came across this two weeks ago when trying to book a Rex flight.

I was going through Sydney Airport anyway, so decided to try to book the flight at the Rex counter there. I was told that it was not possible to book a Rex Net fare at the airport, and that they could only sell me one of the more expensive fares! I asked if there was any possible way to book a Rex Net fare at the advertised price, to which I was bluntly told "no".

I believe this is illegal and complained to the ACCC. I did receive a response, although it wasn't overly helpful. (They seemed to agree that this might constitute drip pricing but just suggested I complain directly to the airline, and contact the Airline Consumer Advocate if I'm not satisfied with the outcome.)

I would encourage others to complain to the ACCC as well and then they might take action.

Good work!

if I pay $100, it becomes $100.40 so hypothetically if I paid $1x100 times, I dont pay a surcharge........... plus about 6 hours of oyour life :)

As you say, that works out at $0.07 per hour. A paper route would pay more and provide some exercise :) do they even exist anymore ?

Ps. I know you weren't seriously going to do this :)

I came across something for the first time earlier this week at Cairns International Airport.

The Duty Free shop (I think it was JR but now Aaelia or something like that) and the newsagent air-side both had 0% surcharge on AMEX but 1% surcharge on all other cards including Visa!

Never ever seen that before :)

Steve

Same in Sydney!

SYD Heinemann Duty Free definitely surcharges Amex. Last month $2.90 became $2.94.

Can't recall whether it was less for MC/Visa.

Satisfying today using 5 x VISA ONLY 1 cards to pay for the scheduled service on my Subaru. They wanted 3.4% for AMEX.

I was having a subaru service too. They waived the 2.8% surcharge as didn't want to reprint the invoice :)

Tynan by any chance? I noted they've started charging this at my last service. They also called and abused me after I rated them down on the Subaru survey (apparently I was being "absolutely ridiculous" by giving them a low rating).

Yep Tynan. Can't wait to be offered the chance to give them a low score in a Subaru survey as they also kept me waiting 30 minutes as they lost my keys!

Nothing but praise for Bill Buckle in Brookvale but dont think the courtesy van will do your pick-ups or drop-offs

I'm too afraid and embarrassed of using multiple cards when paying something in person. I'd only doing two cards max.

You guys paying $1000 off are respective able

Subaru Australia use those scores as a gauge stick as to what promotions and discounts they provide each dealership.

You'd think that would be incentive enough to provide decent customer service, but incidences like this are fairly normal.

It's easy enough to use the customer service scores as a carrot to dangle as they dealerships are desperate to receive high scores.

FWIW, I don't work at Subaru or a dealership, but have had a family member work at one. That in itself didn't stop that dealership trying to pull the wool over my eyes.

Bought some home office furniture at Matt Blatt yesterday as some pre June business investment. They wanted to surcharge 2% on Amex managed to get it waived they decided to put it through on the system as Visa which was nice of them. Good to ask as some people have discretion. Got nothing to lose.
