AMEX not accepted or surcharge

You can always buy JB GC at supermarkets.

And pay using paypal if putting in a click and collect order

Of course these are options to get around the Amex surcharge.

However, if buying a higher cost item, you can always negotiate a better price in person if you promise to 'buy it now'. This eliminates the use of click and collect and you may end up with unused gift vouchers if you prepurchase them and your negotiation skills are good....

Luckily on this occasion, the new NAB Signature came to the rescue but an Explorer etc would have resulted in a better points earn.

Oh I completely agree, not to mention not everything is available on the website.

For my last item $2k. I bargained hard in person and then just gave them gift cards for payment.

They wouldnt negotiate on the surcharge when I was purchasing a laptop, so I left the store, went to DJs where they matched the price and no surcharge.

My last TV I bought at JB's was 1200 but was reduced to 1K at Jb's and another store a week later. Contacted JB's and they gave me a $200 GC, as they have an unwritten policy of 30 day price match which they only give in a GC.

You'd also often be covered in the same scenario if you had directly purchased the TV using a credit card with the 'guaranteed pricing scheme' as part of the insurance package. Often the T&Cs state that the product has to be advertised in a catalogue or somewhere else verifiable, at least $75 less than the price you paid for the same item (including matching model number etc) and the store that's offering that price is within a certain radius of the place you bought it. :)

It is interesting that none of my Amex cards appear to offer this type of insurance but all of my Visa/MC do.

Perhaps it's not possible in all JB stores depending on their stringency, but I always use Amex there and never pay the surcharge simply by not advising them I'm paying with Amex (despite the big red sign they put on all their EFTPOS machines saying you must inform the staff if you are using Amex). If they asked to see the card, which I'm sure I've seen someone say on here before, I'd put my Amex under my MC, show the MC then just use the Amex anyway. Never seen any of their staff paying that much attention that they'd notice.

Bugger them, JB are a big enough chain to make an Amex surcharge unjustifiable, let alone their ridiculously high surcharge.

Yesterday, I was in CBR on business for the day and I came across 2 merchants who did not appear to take Amex - subway in Marcus Clarke St and parking station nearby. Both had the MC/Visa signage and no Amex signage.
I took a punt and paid with my Amex at both locations and it worked. Looks like a lot of places are signed up for Amex but don't want to accept it so just don't advertise it.

We are trying to get our merchant rate lowered on MasterCard and Visa this month by about 30 points. Our Amex rate as a merchant will be 1.5% next week.

Yes CE you are a legend. It is now a work in progress.
Currently we are shredding our electricity accounts as well as credit card merchant charges.
Almost time to do our status run doubler to NYC as Mrscove wants to be a Qantas Platinum.

Shop Small? or another promo. I must have missed it!

Sorry yeah I think it was the shop small.

We have a few shops listed near new in the shop small that said they don't accept amex, I have reported them to to American express. Hopefully we get the chance to participate in the next round and get a reduction in surcharge fees.

Would paying for your Aussie passport at Australia Post with an AMEX be considered an government charge and thus only earn 0.5 points per $1?

If you have a Velocity Escape card you'd earn 1/$1 until October (if you applied before the reduced government rate was introduced). You could also earn 0.75/$1 using one of the DJs cards, or up to 1.25/$1 using the Westpac Altitude Black AMEX (WBC doesn't give points on ATO payments but does give full points on other government transactions).

My local supermarket has got AMEX back and the bad news is I missed out quite on a few Local Champion points, so I need to do a few small shops to become the LC again.

I just find it ridiculous that a fried dough cart in a park in Boston can take amex but half of Australia can't accept any credit card without a surcharge.

I've recently returned from a RTW trip and in not one country (I visited 5: Singapore, Switzerland, UK, USA, New Zealand) was there an Amex surcharge, even for major hotels. Yet back in AUS, Amex surcharges are everywhere. Can someone pls explain why this is?
