AMEX not accepted or surcharge

I don't know about other states, but in WA, pretty much only Caltex comes to mind as a fuel supplier who surcharges and even then, its only some, not all of them.

Switch to Woolies/Caltex and get yourself some discounts and/or QFF points... its the same fuel after all.

It doesn't list the surcharges because there generally are none (... Caltex being the exception, but there are no petrol chains (to my knowledge) that have chain-wide surcharges - most of the time, it's an independent franchisee who should just be avoided in favour for someone that actually wants your money)

yeah pretty much - i use a mixture of the two. The one local to me is just a straight Caltex which is annoying. So have to remember to fill up when i'm out and about.

Thank Chris will have to shop around a bit as most of the ones i visit have a surcharge for amex. Just assumed this was pretty standard across the board!

I can't think of any local (WA) petrol stations that surcharge. The one caltex that started near me stopped after about 6 months. Not sure why, but the coles nearby was consistently among the cheapest in the state so maybe they needed to get more competitive rather than less.

There were a few caltex woolies stores that did not accept Amex, but this has changed since they have upgraded their eftpos terminals or software.

I think there is a mobil that still charges 2.2% in Hepburn heights but haven't used that one in a while.

As for surcharges. Got surcharged at Rebel joondalup with no signage or anything, yet made a purchase at rebel Whitfords a few days earlier with no surcharge

You will find that with petrol stations, most petrol stations that are owned by a small business as opposed to a large company will surcharge Amex.

As for rebel, probably a small franchise.

There is a from on the Amex Website under merchant to leave the details of a business that does not accept or surcharges and they will try to sort it out.

This sort of form is what you'd expect of an organisation with a keen eye to increasing market share. Unfortunately, like many good ideas, the implementation and follow up is abysmal. Amex often won't get back to you at all, follow ups, if you get one, can take months, often they will tell you everything is now fine (no surcharge) but when you go back to the store they are still charging as previously.

Its a bit like the big airlines and their 'partners' ... ultimately, no-one cares and the feedback systems just are not taken seriously by the companies themselves. Customers have to be their own lookout.

I agree, used the form many times with little follow-up or results. That said, I am eternally optimistic so just went through my Mastercard statement and submitted every organisation I paid in the last 2 months again. Another 20 or so submissions, we'll see if anything comes of it.

I recently recieved my first "this merchant now takes amex" email, but their website hasn't changed. Maybe the physical store (I'm in WA, they are eastern states) accepts it now.

I think because the Caltex are generally (more so) privately owned, whereas the C/W ones have much bigger backing

Worst I've had was about 1.8% on AMEX I think, the Caltex near Perth airport.

The Caltex branded stores are franchise and not owned by Woolies, hence most of them surcharge

I have submitted a few "leads" to Amex lately about stores not accepting Amex.

I had stopped but thought I'd submit a few again.

They got back to me within 2 days but all were "declined"

This one is interesting. LVMH Watch & Jewellery (UK) Ltd does not accept AMEX. Essentially, Tag Heuer is one of their brands that they own so all servicing is done through them. You'd think a luxury watch brand maker would accept AMEX.

Flashware try Costco for diamonds and Tag watches on the Internet. They are number one in America for diamond sales and they definitely had Tag watches in my local store in Los Angeles.
I don't know how to miss the added sales tax unless you get it from a State like Oregon where there seems to be zero sales tax.

But for servicing (which is what I'm having done) you have to go via Tag direct

I have a UK issued Amex Plat Charge Card ; the global transfer service works really well. You have the option to keep your original card as well (which I've done so, for now).

I was incredulous at MEL international departures today when told I had to pay a 1.5% surcharge for Visa at the duty free store. At an international airport! Then you look at an american magazine with a US cover price of $4.99 and the store here is charging $12.99...What international visitors must think of this sort of thing I can't imagine.
