A couple of wins last month.
Stayed at Rydges port Macquarie and as shareholders the Amex surcharge was wiped.
Second lunch at Cassegrain winery(not recommended) told a 7% surcharge for Amex.WTF.But their machine wouldn't accept my visa so got to use amex without surcharge.

7 (how f'ing much) %. I hope you are going to report them to Amex. That is beyond belief!

That's bang out of order. THe surcharge needs to displayed on the pumps so you can make an informed decision. I would have argued it there and then and refused to pay unless the surcharge was removed. Definitely worth complaining to BP and Amex. Luckily none of the BP stations I have been to recently to take advantage of the Amex statement credits have surcharged or worse still refused Amex.
Sent feedback email to both Amex and BP.

BP apologised and said they will send business manager out to the store to try and improve the signage. Not holding my breath.

Amex refunded the surcharge but also mentioned they have a right to have a surcharge in place. I don't disagree but those signs need to be clearly displayed everywhere so I can make a decision before putting petrol in the car.

Not a bad result then.

Not a bad result at all.

Too much to expect all businesses to be honest and up front about surcharges. Easy when you walk into a shop and go to cash register with say some milk. If they mention surcharge you can just walk away. You can't do that in restaurants or service stations etc.

Next time I will walk inside and ask if they surcharge and walk away if they do.

My local hotel, The Harbord Beach Hotel, has a surcharge in the restaurant which is not indicated in any signage, anywhere. Gives me the irrits.

I just arrived in Samoa and even the Sheraton (Aggie's in Apia) doesn't accept Amex. Very strange they blamed a change of banks but it may be Samoa wide as the Tanoa also said on their web site also that Amex not accepted.

In my recent US trip I had no surcharges on anything I bought and the Kris miles are piling up in the warehouse of my US Amex.

Aussie restaurants are increasingly surcharging all cards - at least here in Sydney. Luckily many accept Amex so 3 points per dollar on many Amex cards for dining lessen the pain somewhat.

I like that most of the black cards actually earn the full points quota on the companion Visa/MC when used overseas. Usually save 0.5% on currency conversion fees also.

Yes, I'm hitting this quite often now, even with my regular haunts over here in PER. Big charges, 1-2-3% on VISA/MC and very often the same with Amex. ie; not higher which is unusual, perhaps people are becoming wise to the supermax cards that are out there in droves now costing them a lot more than the nowadays rather rare basic VISA/MC.

Even Debit cards are attracting fees. I never use one so perhaps its always been so, but I've been noticing recently 1% or a straight transaction cost of 50c for the use of debit cards at some small eateries and off-brand supermarkets.

Perhaps this is a more fundamental change than just a claw back of CC fees ... one wonders if its a gentle nudge towards preferring cash ... times are tough, cash is king and so much more 'flexible' as an income source.
