AMEX not accepted or surcharge

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

I think the low rate Amex comes from CBA. I remember there's a condition attached, but can't remember exactly what it was. It's something along the line that there's no surcharge, or the surcharge is same as Visa/MC.

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

Yup. That's why every time I get asked to pay a surcharge for using Amex, I file a report on the Amex website. I have had a few wins, with companies deciding to either reduce or eliminate their surcharge for customers who wish to use American Express cards.

Does Amex contact you to advise what happened? Or do you just see the changes next time you're at that particular establishment.

They contact me with the results.

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

Hertz now looks to have implemented a credit card surcharge in Australia:

CREDIT CARD SURCHARGE OF 0.8% WILL APPLY TO QUALIFYING RENTALS

No differentiation between AMEX/VISA/MC etc at this stage, but perhaps that is coming!

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

Cellarmasters (next to Holiday Inn, Surfer's Paradise); "that will be a few $ extra"

No mention of a set % surcharge, but just that it would cost a few dollars extra.

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

I just tried to pay my NRMA insurance online and the Amex option is no longer there .
I then rang them and was told that they are phasing Amex out as it's costing them too much money, but for now I can still pay with Amex on the phone or at a branch.
I asked to be transferred to someone higher up and told her that I will take my business somewhere else if they stopped taking Amex.
With the current 5000 pts bonus for every 5 transactions, now is the time to be selective on who's taking Amex.
Well, let's see what will happen!

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

Wow - my car insurance is debited monthly by NRMA to my Amex card. I havent been told about this as yet. I am not sure I would switch because of this - the insurance price is the key thing.

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

always found nrma to be exp. anyway.
aami always gave me 20% cheaper

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

I have recently filled out the online form notifying AMEX of places I would like to use my card.

https://www152.americanexpress.com/eforms/un/en_AU/eformsPage.do?face=en_AU&prod=Rapid&todo=view

I highly recommend using this tool...

I have already got one merchant to accept AMEX... and for the other 2... AMEX have notified me that they are actually negotiating with them now, to accept the card!

Yep I have done about 10 of these over the past week, I am sick of places not accepting AMEX. Now AMEX have the promo I walk out if they dont' accept AMEX.

I also send an email to their head office as well letting them know, as sales staff won't care if I walk out.

Now I have received a few emails back from AMEX saying they are "currently negotiating with Managment"

Is this just a standard response or are they actually doing it ?

Well i am actually part of a group that has been offered a deal by AMEX... and I am weighing up the pros/cons of the deal.

I also lodged a request on that site for the group... to see what the response would be.

I was given the line... "currently negotiating with management"... which in this case, I know to be completely accurate....

So it would appear that they are actually following up on our complaints, based on this limited "test".

Well done AMEX.

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

Shame there isnt a referral for places with a surcharge. I only shop at JB Hifi as their Xbox games are frequently 25% cheaper than elsewhere and I wont pay a surcharge.

There is!

Make a complaint on this page here:

I too have had the problem at JB Hi Fi... However, over the last 5 years we have bought 4 plasmas of the manager at my local store, so he gives me the rock bottom price... so i can't complain (to him) and just pay with visa.

I will fill out the form as well..

It is very strange... all these large merchants... the store manager says it costs them something like 1.4% more than Visa so that is what they charge...

Coles are probably paying 0.04% for visa/mcard and 0.05% for Amex.

You would think Amex could do JB a deal... bring them down to visa/mcard.. even below >>?? Never know with these complaints adding up.

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

I've filled up the online complaint form regarding my above incident to Amex.

Car Insurance, Life, Business & Home Insurance takes Amex and their prices are good too as you are buying direct from the insurer and not giving a commission to anyone. I bought the travel insurance for the USA trip there.

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

NRMA is still accepting AMEX as of today if you call them.

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

Noticed that our nearest Caltex now charges a surcharge (2.5%) for using AMEX according to new-looking signs pasted on the pumps and at the payment console. Sign also says Visa/Mastercard 0%, so I used Visa today. Will probably go to Shell next time I need fuel :(

Woolworths supermarkets next to surcharge for AMEX maybe?

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

Woolworths supermarkets next to surcharge for AMEX maybe?
That would be an interesting move but unlikely as it may scare shoppers away to Coles.

On another note I seem to notice a lot more smaller businesses, and no surcharge, accepting Amex these days....
