You do need to supply an Australian phone number, but that's it. Could try just inputting your own number. No ID required. Click through and see what the questions they ask. You can always back out.
I could really use the points but I don't want to risk losing my Amex card if I do something wrong. I have friends and relatives but I def wouldn't give them the card.
Can you limit an AU? Like if you want someone to be able to use a small amount in an emergency but not be able to go on a spending spree? If I had kids, I would want them to have maybe a $200 limit if they needed an Uber or something in an emergency but not go shopping any time they wanted.

I don't believe so.

Amex charge card only . login your amex account -> account management -> card management -> Manage Spending Limits for Additional Cards

Also all the additional cards will post to main card holder address, you just activate the card, you don't need to give them card anyway.

Rang recently to get a Velocity Amex supplementary (for travel insurance for one of the family looking to book os flights etc) after not adding anyone for a few years - hoped for a 5,000 point bonus to be available. No joy.

Thought I may as well check on my fee-free for life Gold Amex. 5,000 points for adding a supp.

Added supp to both cards. Told 5 to 7 business days for free card, and 10-14 for Velocity one (would have thought other way around...).

Two days later new Gold arrived, day three the new Velocity one arrived. Points arrived day one.

Moral of the story - check all Amex cards from time to time....

Has anyone successfully added the additional user without being asked for their id? Are they usually automatically approved?

Yes for the first question. Got the approved confirmation, but then got an 'in review' e-mail. Got approved a few days later and the 10K points (DJs Amex) were posted. Supp is in my name ... first initial and surname, that is.

Yes and Yes, but YMMV - I added a supp under a shortened version of my name, no questions asked

I'm sure I'll get hounded for saying this, but I'm sure it's going to end in tears eventually for some folks who are creating supp cards in variations of their own name. It's a bit like claiming that tax deduction that isn't actually work related. You get away with it until you don't.

For a messily 10k points I don't think it's worth the risk. It's easier enough to play by the rules and get a supp card in someone else's name.

10k points is like 8 months of grocery shopping points for me so it's not something to be sneezed at. My hesitation is that I literally have no one other than my husband who already has a supp card. So I can give a name but not id, phone number or correct details. Does the card come addressed to me or the name I supply?

You can create supps for friends and just never give them the card? They just need to be willing to verify their ID, buy them a beer/wine for their trouble.

The card comes addressed to the supp holder C/O you at your address.

What happens if the id is not verified? Do they just deny the supp? Worst case scenario?

How about your parents or in-laws? All mine have them, no questions asked, but I don't give them the card.
