Another option is to put to Etihad guest to redeem on AA, 60K in J each way to Europe and 80K in F. It can be better value as you don't pay the fuel surcharges my award back was 200 in taxes compared to 450 on MH plus I have 4 flights to leave from Dubrovnik on the same award. You can fly Malaysia on this as well.

You can't do Etihad to Australia using AA miles can you?

The taxes for us flying Malaysian business/first to Paris from Hobart Tasmania was $74 each which is a bargain.

Dale.

Actually it's the other way round, its AA using Etihad miles as Etihad is a transfer partner of AMEX. You need to route via Asia though as Middle East is not a valid region to transit for Aus.

Also note that when I checked with AA I was told there is one exception to Middle East not being a valid transit for Aust to Europe and that is the Qantas flights. It is an exception I'm told because the flight number stays the same so it is treated as just one flight and not a transit or change flight in the Middle East. Apparently Etihad changes their flight numbers so can't be done with them.

Ah that's great to know! Currently I'm flying MH out of CDG stopping in KUL on the way but I might just fly continuously out of LHR and I was wondering about this. I was looking at changing to Cathay too as their flat beds are longer and I won't quite fit into the MH one at 6'3. I'll have to set some alerts for QF2.

Thanks for that.

But just so I have the mechanics clear.

1/ You transfer points from Amex Mileage Rewards to Etihad. What is Eitihad Guest?

2/ Once there you can redeem on AA.
* But from what you have said in doing this you can redeem on non-AA metal (as AA do not fly between Europe and Australia)
* Is this on AA Code share flights only?

The F option would then look to be most attractive in particular.

Hi,

Has anyone had any success getting this as an existing customer? I'm also looking at the Velocity 50000 point offer. Any tips?

Thanks,
Paul

Well while I was been an existing Amex (Reserve) customer I got the 80K to get the Plat Charge a couple of years ago. Plus I later gained a bonus later to get the Edge.

T&C is a but vague on whether one can do it this time.

Amex confirmed to me this morning that existing Amex customers are also able to claim the 80000 points offer - I made an enquiry to upgrade from the Gold Charge Card to the Platinum Charge Card.

That's great news :) If you need a referral just let me know :)

Still thinking whether I should sign up to the amex velocity plat...

Referral gains only 60000 points for the applicant, and 20k for the referee.

Yep just noticed that. Not sure why they did that. Previously it worked out better for the applicant.

I think this only happens for the plat charge. But I think the edge works about well if using referral for the new applicant.
