amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 3:1 to KrisFlyer and Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders who apply by 28 January 2025 can also earn 150,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

May have missed this but wondering what the possibilities of Amex extending the expiry dates of the 400$+ annual travel voucher credits given the inability to use them with any certainty?

Chances are good. Call and ask. While you're at it, tell them you think the annual fee should be reduced, waived given you cant use most the benefits since they're travel related.

Ha! I can see them pulling a black marker out to splash a big dot on my file ..but yes go hard or go home eh @Daver6

this is the company that said in April last year, "we have made changes to the membership program based on customer feedback"
I had a recent ombudsman dispute with amex and my account was suspended for 3 months, and when it was resolved, I requested , the annual fee be waived because I couldnt use it for a quarter of a year, and this was originally denied

Travel Credits
For Card Members with Travel Creditsexpiring between 1 February 2020 and 30 June 2020 that have not been redeemed, we are extending the expiry date to 31 December 2020. As always Card Members can book for travel up to 10 months in advance.

There is no need to call or take any action, as the extended expiry date will be automatically reflected in their online accounts within the next 6 to 10 weeks. All other terms and conditions for the annual Travel Credit remain the same.

What happens with the companion platinum reserve card if you cancel your platinum charge?

My charge card annual fee is due at the end of April and I still have a travel credit on the platinum reserve that I haven't used. Is it possible to keep the platinum reserve and if so, would there be annual fee on that?

Great question. I don't know the answer. One possibility is use the credit to book a flexi fare as fare into the future as possible and wear the cost of the change. Worst case scenario.

Amex management have been silent during the COVID crisis with absolutely no tangible benefits or fee reduction for their premium members (I'm a 10+ year Plat and ex-wife is 6+ years Centurion) which is extremely disappointing.

The annual fee for me is due soon but I would be cancelling once I've moved all my direct debits and points. If they've decided not to budge during these unprecedented times, they can stick it up their.... (with the metal card)

Reminds me of a song I heard a few days ago on the radio. IDGAF.

Have you thought about, closing your account, and share one single card account with your ex wife? You can immediately get 50% off your annual fee. 😃

You certainly don't understand marriages falling apart, but I'll play along ;)

My verdict: it's not worth it even at 50% off. And I hope things change for better soon!

Based on my experience , If you cancel the Platinum Charge Card , you might have to cough up the annual fee on Reserve if you plan on retaining that.

I understand AMEX won't the AF but have offered Platinum card holders double points for three months - guess that's something though if we're spending a lot less due to the shut down not sure how far that will get you.

Truly amazing times never thought we’d get excited about cash back over FF points. Though I think airline losses when things resume will likely be shared by all stakeholders including FF members so I’m expecting some devaluations. VA points may be ‘safe’ but they’ll go less further after it’s back in the air.

Agree, I've never used points for cash back but it's starting to seem like a good idea at the moment..

Rumour... The reserve $400 TC is disappeared/disappearing??
