amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 3:1 to KrisFlyer and Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders who apply by 28 January 2025 can also earn 150,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

Update - connected my reserve to Ascent premium now i think the reserve and charge card share same MR account.

Today I also paid $1200 annual fee(with CPA discount) but sadly no $400 TC on reserve for me as i was toooo late. Dunno if they will give other benefits or something back to reserve after COVID

The Reserve TC would normally appear on the anniversary of opening the Reserve (if eligible) - which probably wouldn't be at the exact same time as the Plat Charge, as you need the Charge to apply for the Reserve.

Interestingly when I checked today for the Global Dining Collection,
it says
Thank you for your interest in the Global Dining Collection benefit. We are currently working on some changes, so be sure to check back soon for updates. For any immediate questions, please call the number on the back of your Card.

I asked the Plat Concierge what the point of Global Dining Collection was and they said all it really means is that they've "mystery shopped" the restaurants to make sure they're ones worth recommending to their cardholders. I remember in the past there used to be things like free starters or drinks etc, so hopefully something like that comes back. Best I've done was get an 'AMEX table' reserved at last minute which had one of the best views, but don't know if that's specifically a GDC thing.

I believe it is, when trying to get a booking in the past I was told by Concierge that all GDC venues agree to reserve a certain number of seats/tables for bookings through Amex Concierge

Yeah all reserve card applied after Mar 2021 has no $400 TC

Was actually Aug 2020.
I actually would have never gotten that Reserve card if it wasn’t for the TC. Which is a poisoned gift anyway as you have to risk a booking with one of the worst travel agencies around (Amex Travel online).

Thats very sad. I share same idea with you. Was trying to contact CS and see if there is another amex card can be as the companion card of plat charge. Due to reserve literally has no difference in points earning or benefits

Actually points earning is lower than the charge card. The only benefit I could see for holding the reserve (without the TC) would be extra Amex cash back offers. Otherwise I see no point in it.

Nah i dont have TC as i got approved for reserve around Jan 2022. But i calculated it is 2.25MR per $ spend now. I reckon is they cut the 400 TC but slightly increased points earning, for the card approved after TC slash date

And yes re amex offer i share same idea with u

You're right. It was previously 2 MR per dollar. I wonder if the rate was increased for those who still have a TC? Not that it matters, I never put anything on it, unless using a cash back offer.

Ur making a genuine point - i somehow believe everyone is earing 2.25MR per $

Reserve earns 2/$1, even if you have the Plat Charge - so less than the Plat Charge on a per $1 basis.

Each card linked to the same MR account earns at its 'own' rate - so in the same way you can get 3/$1 on some categories with Edge etc into the Ascent Premium account, Reserve is still 2/$1.

Nah i can assure you reseve earn 2.25MR per $

BTW - are there other cards which can be linked to plat charge card and be companion?

I'll try remember to test it out. Actually, another advantage of the reserve card at the moment is another 40k points extra you can earn with the shop small promo.
Sadly neither my charge nor my reserve had shop small offers...

I haven't opened reserve card yet but they advise it is 2.25 for new cards with no TC.

It’s 2.25 and I had that card for ages so I do get the TC too. Which Shop small promo are you talking about- I can’t remember getting anything along this lines… And as a point addict I’d jump on the chance to earn 40k points :p
