amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 3:1 to KrisFlyer and Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders who apply by 28 January 2025 can also earn 150,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

Mate sorry for a bit off topic but do you happen to know what kind of CCs can be treated as companion card for plat charge?
As far as I'm aware it's just the reserve platinum. I've read the odd reports of a few people getting others. When I signed up and enquired I was told just the reserve. I'm happy with it as I get the $400 TC.

It’s 2.25 and I had that card for ages so I do get the TC too. Which Shop small promo are you talking about- I can’t remember getting anything along this lines… And as a point addict I’d jump on the chance to earn 40k points :p
I'm pretty sure then they changed the earn rates about 3 or 4 years ago the reserve card was originally 2 MR per dollar spent.

This was the shop small promo Amex put out around April or May last year.

Yeah if have 400TC it is real good card

Re the earning change i read somewhere that the rate increased to 2.25 after they slashed 400 TC

Hmm, interesting to read above that some are getting 2.25/$1 on Reserve but also the travel credit. My Reserve is still getting 2/$1 but does have the $400 credit. Didn't realised they'd moved others to the higher rate, so learned something new!

If it's meant to be a 'one or the other' scenario, I'm happy with the $400 on the waived annual fee... don't want to call about points and wind up having the credit disappear if changes are made in the backend.

Well. Better than no TC at all lol. I am thinking to cancel or potentially switch to other CC as companion cards(dunno if this is gonna work)
And we are not using reserve card too much anyway unless you have offer or wanna filter some spendings

did u actually spent recently? I spent $533.02 and got 1198 pts. Which means $1 around 2.247 pts. Bur i dont have TC
I've had my Reserve for more than 10 years, so old pricing plan (my $395 Reserve annual comes with free Edge and Gold Charge)

30/01/2022 THE COMMODORE HOTEL MCMAHONS POINT $35.50 70 0 70
30/01/2022 THE COMMODORE HOTEL MCMAHONS POINT $8.50 16 0 16
29/01/2022 AYCC.ORG.AU CARLTON $8.00 16 0 16

See, $1 = 2 points

And I get $400 Reserve travel credit + $200 Edge travel credit. Thats $600 travel credit for $395 annual

That's why I've had many banks telling me to kill my AmEx during home loan applications, but I always say I will never cancel my AmEx even if you were to chop my head off 😄

Aaah- that explains it, my bad. I was still stuck in NZ at the time and must have ignored this offer as it was of no use to me over there!

I'm relatively new to the Platinum Club and was wondering if anyone could help with 2 referral related queries - thanks in advance!

1. Do I still get the referral bonus points (currently 55k on my account) if a friend signs up to a Non-Platinum Amex card such as the Qantas Ultimate whilst clicking through my Platinum link and then selecting 'viewing all cards' and clicking on the desired card.

2. There seems to be some gremlins in the system at the moment - if I send my referral links it gives a 300k point bonus for the Platinum when opened on a laptop yet only 250k when opened on a phone? Similarly for the Qantas Ultimate 130k qantas points on a laptop but only 110k on a phone. And then on an iphone the link won't open at all and gives an error?

Anyone with similar experiences?

1. Yes. However expect lower points u can earn.
2. Its normal. Sometimes the offer will float to different level and can include a huge difference. Just apply when you have the highest tier

IMO yes, the included travel insurance is currently useless for international travel without covid coverage, but I do expect that high end CC travel insurance policies will eventually cover covid for vaccinated travellers, shortly after annual multi-trip policies with covid cover are made available. (to my knowledge none for Australians yet)

I expect it would take a year or two to get to that stage, bespoke policies would be needed for coverage in the meantime where the insurer can take into account the country you are travelling to, what that country's vaccination/case/death rate looks like, and what the medical costs would be if you were hospitalised from covid.

Yikes .. I just stumbled upon your post @sudoer and @Berlin .. Need to do a trip to North America in a week and was planning on coming back through Fiji for a few days but they expect me to show a policy with suitable cover to visit. Doesn't look like my Amex Plat Charge will have it and I will need to purchase additional insurance.
