amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 3:1 to KrisFlyer and Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders who apply by 28 January 2025 can also earn 150,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

FHR booking made using the supplementary card entitled to late check out, free breakfast and hotel credit? If I make FHR booking as the primary card holder for day 1 and using the supplementary card to book day 2 is this considered as 2 separate bookings?

FHR booking made using the supplementary card entitled to late check out, free breakfast and hotel credit?

Yes. supplementary Platinum cardholders can make FHR bookings and are entitled to all the FHR perks.

If I make FHR booking as the primary card holder for day 1 and using the supplementary card to book day 2 is this considered as 2 separate bookings?

If they're in different names they will be 2 separate bookings, but expect to check-out and back in between day 1 and 2.

I've done this with MrsDaver6 once. At check-in we let them know. They allowed us to stay in the same room but said the $100 USD credit can't be combined. Ie, needed to use each one on each day rather than say $200 one day. YMMV though.

I'm impressed they even gave it to you at all. I think that would be the exception rather than the rule

I can't see how they could avoid giving it? We were prepared to checkout and back in again. It's actually saving the hotel money by keeping us in the same room.

From the T&C - they were within their rights to deny the $100 for the second night.

Back-to-back stays booked by a single Card Member, Card Members staying in the same room or Card Members travelling in the same party within a 24-hour period at the same property are considered one stay and are ineligible for additional FHR benefits (“Prohibited Action”)

Did I snooze through a change to $300 annual credit for the plat charge ? Just saw something when scrolling through to redeem some points... Thank goodness I'm grandfathered in - the $450 is still there in my account ( Just renewed Feb :)). Geez - drop that and the reserve credit and this would be very marginal....

It still says $450 travel credit on the Amex website for me?

You’re reading the USA version. Heard that one before.

Similarly, booking a virtuoso, then a prive then an fhr night generally will not work either

so wife received her card yesterday, activated and made first payment.

I can't for the life of me find out how to access the benefits eg Accor+, hotel status etc.

is there a waiting period before we can use them?

You should have received a cardboard leaflet with the URL to activate the benefits. I can't remember what the URL is but it allows you to activate the hotel statuses etc.

thanks all will take a look

we received a T&Cs of the platinum program which i haven't read yet but it looked like standard T&Cs and the nice big special holder for the card itself.

This concierge stuff doesn't surprise, as they had become progressively less helpful to me over last few years. But it really sucks, when it worked it was a huge benefit, hard to see it as anything other than cost cutting, the spin of an app to replace it is basically insulting.

The app is complete garbage. It doesn't let you do anything useful at all. At most it redirects you to a restaurant website so you can use their booking. Seriously, what's the point?!
