amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 3:1 to KrisFlyer and Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders who apply by 28 January 2025 can also earn 150,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

Which status for Accor Silver with QR?

Nothing I believe:

After your first flight, become a Privilege Club Silver member as an ALL Gold member, a Privilege Club Gold member as an ALL Platinum member, a Privilege Club Platinum member as an ALL Diamond member. After your first stay, become an ALL Silver member as a Privilege Club Gold member and an ALL Gold member as a Privilege Club Platinum member.

Assuming this is as simple as it sounds, anyone got the US link?
Don’t think it is

i have the US Plat and just looked online at my account. No link to Presidents Circle. Just bog-standard Gold Plus like Australia and the UK. PC is for Centurion isn’t it??

You can only have one airline linked to Accor at a time. And you can only change airline once every 12 months.
Confirm I changed from QF to QR after a year and it worked fine. Don't remember it being difficult

Australian Plat Card holders can also get access to President's Circle via the US Amex Plat Hertz link.

I’ve gone completely off Hertz, especially in the US where they routinely sent their customers to gaol due to Hertz’s incompetence and poor systems.

EDIT: I know its OT but some people may have forgot

Worrying

I particularly enjoyed the irony of this little gem

They’re also an embarrassment for Hertz Chairman Greg O’Hara, [……] who serves on the board of the Innocence Project, a nonprofit devoted to exonerating innocent people caught in the web of the justice system. The Innocence Project did not respond to my request for comment.

Just got a long survey via email about Plat benefits, seems to be looking for what benefits people would like in addition to / instead of dining benefit to justify keeping the card. Compared to past ones where they have fixed ideas and want feedback (i.e. "from 1-10 how much would you value an Uber credit?") this was much more open about what benefits you'd like. Hopefully they can do something to improve the value prop after loss of concierge and dining credit.

and i also noticed the AF increase questions

Damn I was probably lucky I didn't get arrested in the US about 18 months ago!

I returned a Hertz car (on time) to a hotel/convention centre parking lot in Orlando where they had a rental counter and did a key drop as counter was closed that day before flying up to DC. Then noticed the next day they had charged me an additional amount and when I called they said it was because I hadn't returned the car yet. From memory I think they even charged for another additional day before eventually working out they had the car all along and refunding the amounts without further prompting.

I think there are more fee hikes coming as Amex foreshadowed this at their most recent results.

Looks like there’s a strong appetite for premium cards and the AFs that come with them.

Amex clearly having a laugh ….

Received notification today that the UK BA Premium card is having a fee hike from £250pa to £300 and the threshold for a companion voucher is rising from £10k to £15k ….. and there’s no improvement in the benefits

This is an economy with multiple challenge.

Not what I’d describe as a ‘refresh’ ;)

Amex evidently feel emboldened ….
