amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 3:1 to KrisFlyer and Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders who apply by 28 January 2025 can also earn 150,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

AFF members are welcome to discuss this card in this thread.

Will you get the points?
I heard they changed the conditions on 30th March 2017 to exclude bonus points if you hold ANY amex card

No idea, will do the spend, if no pts are posted ill cancel the card(after trying to get the status with hotels done first and see if they stick). Will update this thread.

Ive just been approved for the platinum charge card which i am surprised because of the cards i already hold all under personal.
So it is possible to hold djs, explorer, edge and plat charge

Very interesting. I'm not surprised you were able to get the Charge card (as you don't already hold a personal charge card), but I am surprised they let you get an Explorer, an Edge and a DJ's card.

Let us know if you end up getting the bonus points.

Let me know because I want to apply for one and will only be happy with the bonus points

Just to update on my situation, I'm happy to report that I did get the 120,000 bonus pts from points hack referral link. I will now try to get the amex reserve card just for more card numbers.. would be interesting if I do!

Can you remember when you applied for it? Before or after the 1st of April.
Did they make a new ascent premium profile and merge all the points into it or is it seperate
cheers

I applied on the 30th of March I believe, as that was the last day for the 120k pts from points hack. If it wasn't the 30th then it would be the 31st, either way it was before 1st of April.

My points have not merged yet, I believe I will need to make a phone call in order for that to happen. I did have to setup a new login ID for amex.com.au as they wouldnt let me use the one I use for edge or the explorer (may be a better idea anyhow to make sure travel credits don't get muddled up).
My explorer card is on the ascent program so it is linked to the Edge cardScreen Shot 2017-04-08 at 3.48.21 PM.png, so I believe I will just need to make a phone call to get the explorer card and edge card linked onto the premium ascent program.

Will report back on how that goes.

Good for you and pleasing to hear that everything was still "working" as expected at least right up until the most recent change to the T&C's

Getting your existing Ascent program upgraded to Ascent Premium is as simple as a phone call - you should have no problems at all getting that one done!

Need some quick help from someone please.

I was going to sign up for the Platinum Card, however since I already hold a amex product I had my mother signup (bonus 110,000 + 15,000 for referral from me) with me as a supplementary card.

My card arrived at my place today, however her primary card did not arrive at her residence.

Now ... I'm flying out Easter Monday and was hoping to use the Plaza Premium lounge. Just wondering if the supplementary cardholder needs to be nominated as the one with "lounge access" or since i'm the only sup card holder will it just apply to me?

Worth calling up amex and asking them for login details for my mum, so i can see options onscreen.

What has everyone else's experience with bonus sign up points being credited to their account been like?

I received my the charge card 6 weeks ago and met the qualifying spend within the 1st week week but still no points. I gave Amex a call and the operator just said points are usually credited once the min spend has been met but can take up to 8-10 weeks to be credited. Should I give Amex another call?

Cheers

Based on when you applied I think you were under the old T&C's, which means you should be eligible for the sign-on bonus as long as you haven't held a Charge card in the last 18 months. Normally the bonus points post quite quickly, but I have seen people on here (and elsewhere) that have had them take 8 weeks to credit.

I'd probably wait a couple weeks, unless you need the points urgently, and then give AMEX another call if they haven't credited.

for me, once the spend came off of "pending transactions" and into actual transactions, my bonus points were credited on the same day.

same for me, they appeared next to the transaction in the Bonus Points column with an additional line of "Welcome Bonus" 110,000. I signed up in Feb and held an Explorer Credit Card, no previous charge card product and not impacted by the changes in T&C's

These super quick signon bonus points postings is exactly what I've experienced with AMEX. I've noticed a few people who have been having "long" delays though.

Well, to give you an idea, I hit my spending within 2 weeks since 06/02/17 and I have yet to see any bonus point applied as of 28/04/17.
I had chat online with Amex and CSR is looking into this matter for me. I had paid 2 statement cycles already

Give them a call/email about it.

Just wondering if anyone has been successful getting the sign-up bonus, after the new T&C introduced? (that is, they have existing AMEX credit cards, but no prior charge cards)

Has anyone else had trouble obtaining an application form for the companion Platinum Reserve credit card? I've called on four separate occasions and despite their reassurances that they are sending it out, nothing is coming through to my mailbox. I have received other posted letters from Amex in the meantime which makes it even stranger.
