amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 3:1 to KrisFlyer and Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders who apply by 28 January 2025 can also earn 150,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

Did you get a look at the showers by any chance?

I visited the SYD Plaza Premium arrivals lounge again this morning to use the showers. The shower rooms were quite small but well ventilated and with good shower pressure. I would say they're a better option that the QF SYD T3 showers, I can't comment on VA SYD showers.

They have also improved the breakfast offering, although I didn't partake so can't comment on how it tasted.

And here's a shot of the alcohol behind the bar:

Thanks for sharing this. This looks like a much better option to use rather than the SYD domestic J lounge (if connecting).

Hi All.

If I already hold a plat edge card, and if I go for the plat charge personal card, will I be eligible for the sign up bonus points?

Thanks.
K.

You're an existing customer, so no. But you could contact Amex and ask if they have any upgrade offers available.

On the positive side, all my Edge points were converted all to the premium charge points so don't spend them before you apply for the charge

How does that rate compare to the new Star Alliance HSBC?
Still better. At 2.5:1, Amex would still be 0.9 pts per $

HSBC is $1:1 for start points but it is 0.8 pts per $. However, this is for the 1st $3k spend which reduces to $1:0.5 so it would be 0.4 KF per $ so not great

Might be why. They can afford a deval.

When will this be in effect?
No word as to if it will actually be implemented, it was asked in an AMEX survey I got in the last few days regarding my AMEX Platinum Charge. The questions were initially about what you wanted from a rewards card and asked you to picked which you preferred from no points cap, better redemption rates, etc and then went on to ask about what you would do if Krisflyer redemptions increased to 2.5:1.
