amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 3:1 to KrisFlyer and Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders who apply by 28 January 2025 can also earn 150,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

Re Priority Pass for secondary cardholder requires the secondary cardholder to be issued a supplementary charge card prior to enrolment? Presentation of charge and priority pass required to enter the lounge (excl Centurion).
AMEX says it requires id to be provided for supplementary card application.

Now that my Platinum was recently renewed, the associated Priority Pass still has the old expiry date on the payment card. The Priority Pass account itself is still current. I can see the old expiry and the app invites me to update my payment card, but it's disabled. I contacted Priority Pass and they said Amex has to fix.

The Amex agent I webchatted three weeks ago said it would take 5 business days. Two more agents in the last week have said it's fine and/or talk to Priority Pass and/or delete and reinstall the app.

To whom do I reach out at Amex to get this actually fixed? Is this something for the concierge email?

This happened to me too.

From what I remember it was actually fine to continue using the Priority Pass even when the Amex on Priority Pass’ file has expired, whether it’s the physical card, in your Apple Wallet, or in the app (there will be a pop-up message that you can ignore from memory).

I contacted Priority Pass thinking I’d update the expiry date with them, but they said that it had to come from Amex because the Priority Pass is linked to the Amex card.

I then contacted Amex through online chat and it was sorted out. I can’t remember how long it took but from memory it didn’t take long.

Mine is expired too but I just used a lounge yesterday with priority pass and no issues

Just came across this post on Facebook. Not good if true — yet another way Amex has found to strip value from the Platinum Charge.

I think it probably is true, my recent interactions with the Platinum Lifestyle email address have been responded to with the following signature:

Centurion Lifestyle | American Express
Travel and Lifestyle Services | GPO Box 458 Sydney NSW 2000

There are two issues here.

Firstly, using the lifestyle/concierge via email has totally gone downhill post Covid. Any request is handled poorly or not at all. So doing it via an app, unless service improves is pointless.

Secondly, how does using an app get you out of bind. You know, that late night locksmith problem solving kind of thing.

Bad move here.

Wife just got approved for the platinum card, she already has Accor plus via the recent $200 family and friends offer.

can she just ask for another membership to be created with a different email? What's the best way to not let this go to waste?

Wait for her current membership to lapse, activate the included Accor Plus membership later in the membership year.

If you don't care about Accor points/status and want to use the free night cert asap, use another email address.
