amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 3:1 to KrisFlyer and Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders who apply by 28 January 2025 can also earn 150,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

Could no longer find Park Hyatt Melbourne for FHR bookings.
Anyone know whether it has been taken off?
Park Hyatt is a regular fixture. It has been there for years. Park Hyatt is highly recommended. Good place to go. Nice central location. They keep fiddling with the website for some reason...

Also received the email about the down grade.
Also received the email. I have queried it with AMEX, who say according to their resources we still should have Radisson Premium membership. The agent I spoke to said this was the first they have heard of the downgrade and that they will investigate.
I also got an email response from Radisson which just quoted generic tier eligibity according to stays which warranted the downgrade. No mention of Amex partnership!

Could this be a system glitch and we will receive an apology email in a few days??

Does anyone know how long does the Amazon Prime credit typically gets credited? My subscription was charged on 2 Oct. but the credit hasn't posted yet.

This is taking longer than expected for you. I would call them. Or use chat function and alert them.

how long do people normally wait for the foreign dining benefit to hit? Spent $110 at Mikuni in Singapore on Oct 13 and not credit yet.

Usually takes about a week going off my spend in the UK and Japan (Pocket Concierge), both in Sep

Paying by the month? I think they upped the monthly charge so it will now exhaust the rebates before the end of the year. IIRC my rebate was reduced in September.

I think if you pay annually you get it fully rebated.

My domestic one took a few weeks recently. Used the international one in early October and yet to see it credit, but the T&Cs say up to 30 days and I'll wait a little longer than that before chasing up (although I did have to manually submit a receipt last time I used the international one to have it raised).

thanks, not sure i kept my receipt but the charge on the card is clearly from Mikuni so hopefully ok

Wanting to check my understanding - while most benefits are tied to anniversary date, the dining credits are tied to calendar year? So I can sign up now and get a credit in December and a credit in January? Thanks in advance all.

Yes, the dining credits and certain other long-term benefits such as Amazon Prime are linked to the calendar year.

(So if you're interested in Amazon Prime, you could sign up now, take out a 12-month subscription which will renew in October 2025, and have Amazon Prime for 10 months after the AmEx offer expires at the end of 2025).

When signing up for a new platinum card, has AMEX ever offered another bonus in-lieu of sign up bonus points as i currently have the Explorer card.
