Good for you. I will update you about my results. They recently claimed never to have received an application for the companion cards. I forwarded the rejection letters. :-) glad it worked for you.

Not a particular person. It was addressed after the first contact with the FOS. Spoke to different people but received a letter with proposal after they had to reply to the FOS.

So it's all fixed?

Folks,

Just to summarize, I just cancelled my Plat card - they did offer me 20,000 points to stay but in all honesty I could justify it.

regards

Rono

Good move - I cancelled months ago - never looked back :)

Cruiserette cancelled her Plat 2 weeks ago - she also wanted to cancel Reserve Credit card - she was offered $500 + free flight to keep Reserve Card - she said ok - has booked the flight and spent the $500 - now she will call back and cancel the card.

So AMEX have now lost her $1,200 + my $5,000 for Cent from our household - and I bet we are not Robinson Crusoe here - AMEX surely on a slippery slope.

FOS did contact AMEX. And called me back. All fixed. Got approved for compl. card. Thought it was a painful and long process, but eventually got it through support FOS.

Excellent. I read a legal website that said Fos charges them $5k to $15k per complaint. you'd think they'd learn to be nicer.

Bwahaha. Warren Buffet better jup on the phone to Chennault

In the case the Chennault said could affect their whole business: "The U.S. Department of Justice on Tuesday accused American Express Co. of trying to "prolong and complicate" an upcoming trial in the government's antitrust case over the company's merchant policies by pushing to delay all battles over evidence admissibility until trial.

The DOJ and AmEx are gearing up for a June 16 trial over the government's claims that the credit card company's rules banning merchants from encouraging consumers to use less costly payment methods are anti-competitive".

I think Fos and the ACCC are boning up on it - the ACCC tends to lob a fine if the US gets a conviction, as happened when Qantas was fined $US100m and sent some Qantas people to the slammer.

Some great pearls of advice streaming in over recent weeks.
A couple of quick queries: My renewal month is September - how much cancellation notice should I give? Also, have any cancelling cardmembers had any issues with AmEx trying to deny them their current year "freebie", as a result of the cancellation? I've had info from a friend that this has happened. By the way (& to save me trawling back through posts), is FOS the Financial Ombudsman Service ??

Yes. FOS is Financial Ombudsman Service. I didn't cancel - I finally got ALL the benefits incl the comp card. Good luck.

Probably 45-60 days at least: and use registered post because they lose mail. And ring them so there's a note on their file. And ring again and fax them.

About 'free flights' I called to query the fee, they said it was jumping to $1200 soon, and I asked about the free flight. No flight for you, said the csr, when I said $1200 is a huge hike I won't pay. I wouldn't trust the csr, but it's as if they won't let you fly 'free' if the card isn't 'alive' at the time you plan to fly.

Turns out it's not free either or VA wrongly charge baggage for every ounce ie no 23kg allowance. ?????

Fos is indeed that body. Worth every cent: it's free but a legal website says it costs banks and cards $5000 to $15000 per complaint .

They are a bit slow.. And having different people work on the case doesnt help. But I believe that if I keep trying something will happen. People tend to give up too easily. I ll try to keep going and see what happens.

Those who persisted will overcome.

There are "new and improved rules" btw. Professor Lavarch was very happy with ways to cull the backlog. Have you been culled yet?

I finally got everything I asked for. Took a year! But complimentary card is now finally approved. FOS definitely intervened and Amex initially didnt respond to them either. I would say: perseverance is a must.

"Amex didn't respond to Fos either". Wtf is going on at FOS? Their members are bound by the (weak) Constitution and the "Terms of Reference" (drafted by bankers for bankers?).

Guess Amex is also pushing it a little bit. Eventually FOS also sunk their teeth into it. And voila! Pity it takes so much effort.

I'd threaten them with stand over men from Asic. They'll beat them up with a wet lettuce leaf

Fos is a wet lettuce leaf when it comes to standing up to their members. I chatted to Michael Fleming, "www.thearbitrator.co " to see what he's like. He has excellent contacts.
