AMEX Platinum Charge Benefits - Q&A

Cancelling your credit card early does not affect you elite status. The only thing that gets affected is the Priority Pass. Best to get elite status at the start of the year because it last for that year and the year after.

As it turns out I called SPG this arvo when stuck in traffic. They said that I lose gold status immediately when I cancel my charge card even if I wait until after my membership anniversary.
She did explain there essentially wasn't much difference between gold and 'preferred' benefits when I 'soft land' (just a bit of sugar coating) to base level.

Just checked my SPG status, and I am still showing as Gold even though my charge card was cancelled 6 weeks back. No other elite statuses (Accor, Shangri-la, Club Carlsson) impacted as yet either.

Thanks adelee for the data point. I'm assuming my Accor will disappear shortly but I've got HH Diamond until March 2018 and currently planning a trip to Conrad Maldives so will be a happy camper.

No worries. Quick query - is your Accor up for expiry shortly, or are you thinking that it will be revoked for some reason?

I'm coming up to my platinum charge anniversary so am assuming it's terminating with that anniversary.

I doubt we will get 5x points because there is so little competition for credit card in Australia. We only have one hotel branded (Hilton) card.

As a point for future reference, it took less than 16 hours after I applied on the Amex website for the Gold upgrade to be applied to my HHonors account.

As I read the T&C, it appears that you will remain Gold as long as you hold the Charge (possible multi year comp). Is this interpretation correct?

My understanding is that all the hotel benefits are ongoing (well, until Amex stop the association). I believe that all except Priority Pass persist until the end of that membership year if you cancel (despite T&Cs) but not been in that position

I've not asked about HH but did ask SPG a couple of months ago and they said it was a monthly proposition with Amex. Would lose your gold status (unless qualified under your own steam) once Amex card was cancelled so couldn't time your cancellation to game another membership year at gold for instance.

we recently got advised that our supplementary card will be replaced, early. our card has another year before it was to actually expire. apparently it is getting a new chip. did anyone else get ? im wondering what its about. maybe new swipe entry into velocity lounge?

Same here for both AMEX Charge Platinum and AMEX Platinum Reserve cards - Reserve does not provide entry to Velocity Lounge so unlikely this is related.
Yet to receive the new cards so unsure of any visible design changes either..

got an interesting phone call from Accor today. They were noting that my account was going to expire due to the amex/accor relationship ending. They offered the reduced rate of $260 for another year AND I get to keep platinum status. Seemed like a good deal, as I thought normally you'd get sent back to silver.
now we can status match with Hilton!

When was your Accor Plus membership due to expire? Mine is expiring at the end of November 2016 and I'm also waiting for their call :)

Details of the "soft landing" offer are here: https://www.accorplus.com/platinumaustralia

There's no mention about retaining Platinum status... did you actually re-qualify based on points / stays during the previous 12 months or was Platinum offered as a "sweetener"?

expiring 31st of Oct. And no, I wasn't anywhere near re-qualifying for Plat. So I think they're just getting ahead of the game and trying to offer a good deal. As another sweetener they offered a free breakfast buffet voucher (for 2) if I could give them the contact of a friend who might be interested in joining...

Yes the folks at Accor Plus can very pushy when it comes to on-selling, best to give them the names of people you don't really like ;)
