AMEX Platinum Charge Benefits - Q&A

I didn't realize this list could be so long:

We will not pay for or reimburse any costs arising from or relating to:

Item 6. jewellery; precious stones; rare and precious coins or stamps, one-of-a-kind items including antiques, artwork and furs, cash or its equivalents, travellers’ cheques, tickets, services, PDAs, Smartphones and accessories, recorded media (including but not limited to CDs, DVDs, computer software, video and audio tapes); books; animal and plant life; consumable and perishable goods (i.e. food items); healthcare items; used or rebuilt and refurbished items; sale or discounted items; motorised vehicles and their parts; land and buildings; items permanently affixed to home, office or vehicles.
Looking at the new terms and conditions - refund protection now excludes 'sale and discount' items. This is a really poor change for us. In practice, I don't know how they tell if the item was purchased on sale (unless the invoice notes this).

that's a rather pervasive list of exclusions, isn't it!

Has anyone had much success with concierge-assisted restaurant bookings recently?
I've been unsuccessful each time in Sydney unfortunately (for restaurants off the global dining collection).

Not recently.

The best I can offer is about three years ago we walked past Quay restaurant in Sydney a day or two after they re-opened after a three month renovation late afternoon. Not expecting much I stepped inside, as lunch service was wrapping up, and as politely as I could said "I'm almost certain your answer is going to be 'no', but you don't happen to have a table for two as a result of a last minute cancellation for tonight that you need to fill, do you?".

The response was "You don't happen to have an Amex Platinum card do you, and do you mind a 5:30 sitting?"

I said "Yes, and No" and we had one of those great meals.

We reckon we had the best table in the house, too - elevated section, view directly across to the opera house, got there early for the early sitting and watched the restaurant fill and the sun go down, had as long as we liked, and really enjoyed it.

Turned out they had had a cancellation, the deal was they were expected to hold a cancelled table for Amex until 5pm under their agreement, and considered that they'd met their side of the deal :).

Do you mean just getting a booking made or getting you a table when the restaurant is already booked out?

Apologies, I should've been clearer - the second option.
Most places I was looking at about two weeks ago are fully booked for December. Thought I'd try my chances but each time they just referred to me the online booking portal... which I'd already done ;). No harm done!

Also thanks for your story @BJReplay. I haven't been to Quay but glad to know you enjoyed your experience!

It's a real bummer and seems to be even worse this year than usual: Obviously, people here in Sydney are really happy that the Lockdowns are finally over- even mediocre places often don't have any availability anymore, particularly on the weekends. Good for the hospitality industry I guess so I won't be complaining!

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere and I’ve missed it. I spent some of my fine dining credit at the bottle shop in the Ivy complex in Sydney CBD yesterday. When I got home, looked again at the offer. Looks like it’s tagged as ‘online only’.

Does anyone have experience of shopping at the bottle shop and getting their dining credit?

I am trying to find out if i can buy gift cards on the merivale site and get the credit i did yesterday but havent received any notice or credit have 2 other cards I need to do it to so any advice appreciated the debit came in as HEMMES

anyone had issues linking their platinum A/C card to MYOB bank feeds?

I've tried and the amex site comes up with an error along the lines of "cannnot be done, please contact us for linking"
I rang them once and they said all good on their end, its MYOB's end even though the error is on the AMEX site.
MYOB is saying they cannot see my application on their end which I agree with as I also feel the AMEX side of things aren't 100% completed.

Hi all.
Thought I’d ask the question here.
Regarding the $300 Plat Dining credit.
Has anyone had success with the credit purchasing an online gift card from any of the Melbourne restaurants?

Many thanks.
Bill
