For those of us that have kept this card - I've noticed that the point payout for QF bookings is not what it should be. Spoke to an agent today and she tried to convince me that the QF ratio is 2/$ however, the letter I got back in Apr states 3/$.

The agent has gone away to investigate & call me back Monday with the answer.

FWIW I'm happy to retain this card as the payout for restaurants/hotels/QF/foreign spend - is better than most.

It depends on the process of payment, and what you purchase. The terms say:

3. Selected Qantas products and services are Qantas passenger flights (with a QF flight number) purchased on the Qantas merchant account i.e. directly from Qantas and Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club membership joining and annual fees. Excludes Jetstar, Qantas Holidays and Qantas branded non-airfare products. Subject to the Qantas American Express Cards Points Terms and Conditions available here.

Here's what it currently says on their website:

For those interested to know what "selected" exactly means, here it is in the terms and conditions. Seems to me like flights with a QF flight number only

From memory I don't think it extends to QF flights purchased overseas, but it might be worth checking.

The bookings I'm disputing were all booked direct from QF website post 22 July, QF ticket/metal/flight No.

The agent quoted the line about Qantas merchant account however, when faced with the facts above - she didn't know the answer.

Nice lady - agreed that I should have been given 3x rather than 2x and committed to raise within and call me back Monday.

If its only 3points per $ on QF flight numbers and 2 for everything else QF related then maybe best to get rid of the card and use ANZ Plat Frequent Flyer card ?
ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum - Platinum Credit Cards | ANZ

1.5 points on the Amex and an extra point (=2.5) for any spend on QF website (flights, accom, car hire, QP membership, etc).
Travel Services - Bonus Partner listings - ANZ Frequent Flyer Rewards
Qantas - Travel Services - Bonus Partner listings - ANZ Frequent Flyer Rewards

Looks like a better deal to me.

What exactly is a Qantas "merchant" account ?

From memory this wording has not changed from what it was before the points enhancement. If you book with QF direct in Australia you get the extra points

To be even more specific, do you mean qantas.com ?
I don't want to book a bunch of flights only for a "nice lady" to tell me that I didn't use the merchant account, or that I do not have a merchant account, or that I am not a merchant, etc. Lol

Looks like alot of potential hassle for half a point more lol.

Cheers.

Depending on the answer I believe you're correct. However, I've got a huge credit limit and thats what's holding back + I'm lazy. For restaurants @ 3/$ and hotels & foreign spend @ 2/$ it's pretty good value.......just don't use it for anything else!

I've got the CBA DIA AMEX rocking the ATO ....it pays a flat 1.5 for everything.

Since July 21st I have put $75 on the 3 cards in total.
Then I answered their survey to let them know that there is NO CHANCE of me recommending this suite of cards when the points earn for my needs is unsatisfactory.
I told them that I had moved to a BIG 4 Bank.

The spend, check, phone, check again practice sounds very time consuming. I'm liking Westpac Black.

This has no relationship to WHERE you purchase, only on which merchant account. This means if it says Qantas on the card statement, Qantas was the merchant. Qantas can be the merchant on different kinds of sales- online at various websites, Qantas ticket counters at airports, any travel agency where you use your card to pay for. Ticket and the agency uses your card as form of payment for the ticket. This is called CCCF, in the industry and works exactly as if you had given your card direct to the airline. Beware, if you buy a rtw ticket, most agencies will plate to the last carrier on the route, to make it easier if you need to reissue the ticket, once it is part used. If the last flight is not on QF and the ticket is plated, to, let's say, BA, you would not get the additional points.

i also think its pretty stupid of Amex that on my Centurion and Platinum card statements, I get details of the airline, passenger, ticket number, etc, but on the QF card, where one would expect to see these details, they don't offer them.

Ok, they have confirmed that I should have been awarded 3x and have manually corrected. They also assured me that they have elevated the issue up the chain to get the glitch out of the system - FWIW it shouldn't be a problem in the future however, it would be best to check over the next 5 days.

BTW - 3x for restaurants is working fine.

I asked. Basically, it's the merchant account that has been assigned to Qantas. I.E. not travel agents, Expedia etc........this is a trap for young players!

I'm in the process of trading mine for a platinum edge. if I'd known the hassle involved I may not have started

Thanks heaps for the reminders to get my free flight in :)

Hi,

I have received an offer to upgrade my Qantas Amex Premium card to an Ultimate one. I am wondering if the change is worth the $100 per annum.

The deal offers an annual fee of $350 instead of $450 (and each subsequent year they say)
plus

One free economy QF flight Brisbane-Sydney/MEL/ADL per annum instead of 2 QF lounge passes.

Double the insurance coverage quanta.
Once only bonus of 7500 QFF points.
Triple points at thousands of restaurants in Australia ( plus the x 0.5 – 2.5 usual point scores that the premium card gives).Of course as we saw on 23 july 2013, this multiple can be downgraded at the whim of Amex.

The offer seems ok to me and I am thinking of taking it up.
Are supplementary cardholders allowed to take up the free flight rather than the holder?
Have any posters had any negative experiences with this kind of upgrade – ie made them regret it ?

I'd be grateful for your thoughts.
