AMEX rejection

It’s irrelevant. It’s the CC churn history that is getting declined.
agreed, i called up to query why i was declined and even offered additional rental income but the guy basically asked if i'd opened and closed a number of accounts within a short period and when i confirmed he said that's why.

Amex have significantly clamped down on churners with this latest round of elevated sign-up bonuses. Hearing reports all over the Internet of churners being denied. It seems they've taken a business decision not to accept customers that they think will be unprofitable.

Would it be ok for a supermarket to ban me from shopping there if I only buy their specials?
No it would not, as the offer is open to the public, they can't discriminate.

Same with Amex. If this statement is true, are they allowed to lie and hide behind "credit application criteria" if the reality is the applicant is a sound credit risk and they prefer to cherry pick the most profitable prospects?

This doesn't sit right with me and I wonder if this is in the sprit of the Credit Act / voilates consumer rights. Sure I've got buckleys of proving anything but in theory which authority could one ask to investigate this?

of course it would, and they can do this, and it isn’t discrimination under the legal/proscribed definition.

If any business wants to ban you they are within their rights as long as it isn’t unlawful discrimination in terms of gender, age, sexuality etc

Hi all. Reapplied for this card today (8 months later). Instant approval. 🥳 Nothing else changed about circumstances.
You're welcome :)

Hi all. Reapplied for this card today (8 months later). Instant approval. 🥳 Nothing else changed about circumstances. Like I said previously, AMEX frat boys throwing darts at applications. 😵‍💫 Either that, or AMEX or gaslightling me. 😬
did you open or close any credit cards in the 8 months?

No. I continue to hold my HSBC SA Gold card that was the last one I opened, in October of last year.
thanks, good to know. I opened for my wife instead so hoping to churn from her to me early next year. I've been avoiding opening/closing any credit cards which is a pain as i hold the 28 degrees card which will start generating a fee from this month.

Hi all, I've just been knocked back for the AMEX platinum charge card based on a credit inquiry and having recently received a copy of my credit history I believe the decision is incorrect and would like them to review it. The letter that AMEX sent out informing me of my rejection only had a snail mail address for me to direct my queries to.

As a first point of call though I contacted the number provided on the initial e-mail about my application being received (1300 557 743) to ask why I had been rejected despite having an excellent credit rating. The call centre staff looked up my application and stated that "no reason can be given to you to preserve client confidentiality"; a line I never really understand as I am the client and I'm perfectly happy for them to waive confidentiality. They mentioned that there could be other reasons I may have been rejected; namely that I have had AMEX cards in the past and closed them before the anniversary date - although she didn't say she seemed to be implying CC churners can be blacklisted. However, that wasn't what they said in their rejection letter - they clearly stated it was a credit inquiry issue, not that you're a CC churner and have been abusing our system and are therefore banned. There was nothing further she could do to assist so we ended the conversation there.

So, a few queries out of this.

1) Was she bullshitting me just to get me off the line, or do AMEX keep a record of folks who close their cards before their anniversary dates and blacklist them from future applications (I have churned two AMEX cards in the past 5 years).

2) What's the next step? Is there one? HUACA? Write to the snail mail address provided?

Any data points on the above greatly appreciated. The lack of any guidance from AMEX is extremely frustrating - I have no idea if this means I can never apply for an AMEX card again. 🤷‍♂️
It happened to me just know. I spoke to the phone to a female receptionist who passed me to a male person, who said no one knows why the system rejects as there are many factors. I have nothing in the past, present and future(haha) that I can find for a rejection. I just wanted the qantas frequent flyers points. Well American Express credit cards are out of my preferred ones. Thinking about it, bad service, expensive and not accepted every where.

I think you're the only person that I've ever seen saying this.

Their customer service is legendary.
I wouldn’t go that far, and it’s definitely gone downhill. I had to escalate to AFCA just to sort a dining credit as the idiot CS agent couldn’t fix my problem.

But still, it’s typically better than most of the others.

Is it ‘safe’ to apply for Amex Biz Plat 3 months after applying for other bank’s CC? I remembered applying for personal Amex within 2 months of getting ANZ card and got rejected due to ‘credit check’. Credit score was excellent btw.

As a general thumb rule it has been observed in the past that , multiple credit applications within a short span of time may be impact your approval as well as your credit score. I am not a financial expert but sharing information gathered from various posts/people. YMMV

Each credit provider has different rules so hard to generalise but too many applications in a short time was traditionally regarded as a negative (though has less weight than repayment history), anecdotally >3 months between applications increases your chances. But have seen contradictions to this rule too, so it’s definitely not a hard and fast for all credit providers.

What's changed is 8 months of no new card applications. I suspect that was the reason you were denied in the first place and now sufficient time has past for some historical applications to roll off.

Same here Amex Hotel Collection US$100 not honoured Needed AFCA for a minor issue.

7 Months in between for me...

Not instant approval, dreaded 5-10 business days message. Will call tomorrow and see but it looks like I'm still in the naughty corner. :(

Hi just wanna share My experience. No issue with credit score, income etc. After more than 18mths since closing Amex Velocity :
Feb 2024: closed CBA , then Applied and got granted ANZ
April 24: applied for Amex Explorer - rejected
June 24: applied for Wstpac - granted
Oct 24: closed AnZ then straightaway applied for AMEX Platinum personal - rejected

The next day, I applied for Amex Plat Business. Waited 4 business days before receiving an email from an actual person saying there was issue with ABN details etc. I called them the next day on business line and the staff helping me basically went above and beyond to show they really wanted me as cus LOL. ABN issue sorted, pretty much instant approval without having to provide any docs.
