AMEX rejection

A data point: it asked for my expenses, but then got the 5-10 day email. I was not asked for payslips. So not holding out any hope

I've likely been rejected for the Essential Rewards card. Last held an Amex Qantas Premium card in 2020/2021, but have since churned 9 big 4 cards since closing that card. Applied Monday, no expenses requested. 5-10 day email straight away and no follow up since. How frustrating...

Data point: was expecting a rejection on the QF Ultimate but was approved.

Application submitted lunch time today - was required to input salary, expenses, mortgage payments, other card limits etc. Post submission received two emails, the 2-5 day email and the request to provide payslips at the same time. The application screen also reverted to the document upload screen after submission. An SMS was received a few seconds before the email came through. The SMS advised to check my email for the information request. I submitted the payslips straight after and was approved an hour ago.

No AMEX held for over 4 years, though was auto declined for this same card in December 2023 (probably as the previous AMEX I held onto was for only a month).

I suspect I may be on the naughty list too. Originally had amex qantas in 2019 and then again in 2021. Tried applying for velocity last year Jan but rejected. Tried amex plat yesterday and was giving the 5-10 BD email. The application didn’t ask for expenses which I thought it was weird.

10 credit enquires over the past 5 years on my file.

I was hoping to use the amex plat as a keeper card.
Data point: confirmed rejected. Over 160k salary, excellent credit score.

Called the amex support to follow up on the application and basically said the same thing everyone else posted. They got some sort of data analytics system and I didn’t meet the threshold aka probably not a profitable customer. Was told to reapply in 90 days but I don’t really see the point unless their system changes.

Just another data point - applied for the Platinum Card and somewhat surprisingly was approved instantly online.

I also received an email stating "we're reviewing your application and will get back to you in 5-10 business days" followed immediately by a second email approving the application.

As data points:
  • I have held two previous Amex cards - Platinum Edge from 2014-17 and Qantas Ultimate from 2019-2023.
  • I haven't churned much in recent years - I've held a NAB Qantas Signature since May 2021 and briefly held a ANZ Frequent Flyer Black from Sep 2023 - Aug 2024.
The only information they asked for was:
  • Income
  • ID Check (Drivers Licence)
  • Address (and length of time at the address)
  • Employer (and length of time at my employer)
They did not ask for a breakdown of income or expenses. My address and employer haven't changed since the last application, so perhaps that helped somehow.

Yes, Amex are pretty good in my experience. I’ve found Amex easy to get cards approved. I’m not a mad churner by any means.

Currently just holding the Platinum Charge and the Reserve, Amex-wise, but have had most of the others.

cheers for offering your card state, sure seems AMEX will approve if you have a record of keeping your cards, maybe specifically an AMEX card for a few years, not churn it within months.
if so seems sensible enough, but churning getting little more difficult, oh well.

Everything being enhanced slowly.
