Amex Travel Credit - covid implication

I just rang Amex as my credit runs out on 14/1 - they said they are extending it to 31/3 but it may not show up online and if I want to redeem it then I have to call and book as I won't be able to do it online

Well an update. They just rang me back to say it isn't going to be extended so it's either use it or lose it. It says on the website Qantas flights only but when I put in eg Adelaide Auckland it comes up with LATAM and Virgin as well. Now I just have to work out how to find a flight in the future I'm almost certain will be cancelled.

Thanks for the update. Will be interested in hearing what you decide on.

So what happens when the flight gets cancelled? Get travel voucher?

Takes the usual 12+ weeks but yes. You can any cash component refunded and a new travel voucher valid for 12 months from the date of the refund finally comes through.

There have been reports of the entire refund including the travel credit being issues in cash

I thought that was if the card had been cancelled in the interim period?

Just to add my experience here for reference. Had a hotel booking over the Christmas period that I had to cancel made with a travel credit and card. Booking was fully refundable. Cancelled on the 21st Dec and just noticed the refund hit my card on the 10th Jan. Travel Credit has also been returned with a new expiry date twelve months from the refund date.
Was advised at the time I cancelled that it could take 6-8 weeks so pretty happy with this outcome.

That's interesting. Did you cancel directly with the property , or with Amex Travel?
Also, are you saying that you got a refund to your card, and the travel credit returned, ie/ double dipped, or have I misunderstood your post?

I cancelled with AmEx travel themselves.
No it isn't a double dip, I got the amount I had paid on card back to the card and the travel credit back.

@SeaWolf what was the reason you cancelled? Change of plans/mind or due to boarder closure?
Border closures unfortunately. I'm based in Sydney. I'd specifically chosen a rate that was refundable up to the day of arrival, just in case.

Have had 2 credits extended so far, one from Jul20 to Mar21 and another from Nov20 to Mar21. Both automatically appeared 6 or so weeks after expiry. Had received email advice on the Jul20 travel credit, extension, but none on the Nov20, which I was just about to contact them about.

2 of mine got extended to end March.
Have just booked a weekend away in the hunter valley at a farm stay. The 4yo will enjoy that.

1 more expires in May and the other 2 later in the year so I'm not worried about the last 2.

For some reason I have 2 reserve cards for free so I get 2x $400 lol

Interesting that they wouldn't extend mine then. Anyway I've booked a flex Qantas ticket except I have to pay Amex $33 if I want to change it - I'll just hope it gets changed enough for me to cancel or change without penalty

Even though it showed accommodation and other flights I could only book Qantas flights

I have one $400 credit expiring tomorrow. No extension when requested on chat, despite difficulty using it for anything. Have booked accommodation in London for Sept and hope to get a refund/further credit if have to cancel. But poor show by AMEX not to extend recent and upcoming credits, given ongoing restrictions.

Try calling maybe? My partner had his TC extended to 31/3 a few days ago (he rang the day before expiry)

It seems a bit variable in how extensions are being offered/applied given the conversions above. Would have thought chat should yield same results as phone call.

A brief note to share that what was the terrific "Reserve or Explorer" travel credit glitch has unfortunately now been fixed. Each card's travel credit is now issued individually under the name of each card. ☹️

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, move along! 😂

Hi All. In the same boat as everyone else here. Got the Explorer for the first time last Feb and expires mid Feb. Contacted Amex and they are unable to extend it either. Does anyone know if you make a hotel booking for a few months time using the credit and then need to change the dates, are there any fees for this?
