Annual fee [waived when 'threatening' to cancel?]

Hi anyone had any luck getting full refund of the annual fee when threatening to cancel the card.

Received my statement last Friday showing the Annual Fee

Rang up today and asked to cancel the card, citing Annual Fee.

No Fee waiver offered, so I cancelled it.

May reapply in a couple of months and get the 16,000 QFF points.

Probably only put about $5k and $10K Tax on it last year.

Move On.

You will need to wait 12 months until you are a 'new' customer.

Called and was put through to HSBC, requested a payout figure or the annual fee to be waived, advised he didn't have the option to waive at this time. But encouraged to keep the card until the fee will be processed (end of feb). Will hold out for 1 month else will cancel.

Actually, tried that first before the HUACA will try again next month when its a little more urgent and I will actually cancel

I have had this card for 2 years now.

Rang up the other day, and asked for a payout figure. When asked why I wanted to cancel I just said I have other cards with no annual fees.

The lady didn't even mention a possible annual fee waiver. So I paid the amount due on the card.

Rang yesterday with a 0 balance, asking for a fee waiver.

A different lady said she would speak to her supervisor. After 10 seconds of "speaking to her supervisor", she advised me that no fee waive was possible.

So I closed the account. I didn't really spend that much on the card though..... probably only $10k a year. I always pay the balance in full too, so never paid a cent of interest.

Oh well.... back to using my orange everyday rewards card!

And today I give it a try again, the guy is rude. I would like to know whether the payout figure includes the annual fee. The reason why I wanna cancel the card is because of the annual fee. If I need to pay the annual fee in the payout figure, why I need to cancel the card? What the guy said I have to pay the annual fee no matter I cancel the card...???!!!

I rang today and asked them to cancel, they wanted to know why and I of course said I hardly ever use the card and cant justify the fee. Their response was that they would "review" to see if they could offer me an annual fee waiver but wont get back until after the fee is due to be charged! No thanks!

I was wondering what would happen with the annual fee if they declined to provide a waiver after you call them back. I successfully achieved a waiver, but I didn't use the card once I saw the annual fee hit the account, pending their decision. It does sound like they have you by the short and curlys.

Got mine waived for 2 years, as i have a genuine intention to close the card.. but since it's free now, might as well keep it.

Have had the annual fee waived for 2 years now, but that looks to end as HSBC is selling the woolies card business to Macquarie...

Previous experience with trying to get an annual fee waived with Macquarie cards haven't been successful - both Jetstar branded and Macquarie branded with approx $25k spending on each card.
Whereas approx $20k spend on the woolies card have gotten me the annual fee waived.
