Anti semitism in Dubai

Perhaps I have displayed ignorance here (certainly not prejudice because I am not judging those who use those toilets) but I thought that was what they used in the Muslim world. The closest I have got to the Muslim world (Lekemba aside) was KL and they had them there along with Western toilets.

My apologies if I got it wrong.

having grown up in an arab country I just assumed everyone would know they have a mix of western and traditional WCs. So i googled it to see how readily available that information was... and not so easy it seems. A google of 'do they have western toilets in arab countries' doesn't return a single page at the top with 'yes'.

In fact the number one article is more of a rant about dry toilet paper... entertaining almost :) toilet hygene in Bangladesh

The direction of this thread has now reminded me of the video of "Poop trucks of Dubai"-check out YouTube

We are all entitled to out views no matter how weird or strange some may feel them to be.
No we are not entitled to have our views and we should all think the same.

Apologies to some people here but the world is not as rosy as you might think it is and if you close your eyes the issues do not simply go away.

Therefore my distinction between taxi and taxi driver.

The taxi driver turns on the meter, the taxi driver collects the fare. They are a sub contractor. The fare is set by government regulation so the fare collect by the taxi is set and it has to be used to pay the driver, the owner and the taxi company. I can't really see any distinction.

while we may think what we like (no one can control that), we are not entitled - without penalty - to express any and all views we might hold. There are cases where the majority of people have decided certain things should not be expressed (racism, vilification, prejudice are a few examples). That is the result of the society and democracy we live in, and we are better for it.

Happy to stand corrected, that Jewish people are not banned from entering Dubai.

However, the fact remains that Isreal is the homeland of the Jewish people. So by banning Israelis, you are effectively telling all Jews to p*ss off, you are not welcome here. And in any case, banning Israelis then amount to just blatant racism, which in any case, is just as bad as anti semitism. What makes it worse is this is state-sanctioned racism.

As to what this has to do with taxi drivers in Australia, I'm still trying to figure that one out.

I'm not an indigenous Australian myself, but I find it incredibly disturbing that a supposedly modern, first world country like Australia still treats indigenous Australians as second class citizens. For this reason alone, I will never fly any Australian carrier, as I would feel like I would be condoning such outdated, bigoted and offensive thinking.

Such practices may have had their place decades ago, but surely not in 2013?

Last time I checked, discriminating against Aboriginies was illegal in Australia

Someone can say that Thailand is a "cough hole, and a swamp" and no one questions their reasoning behind the comment.

I should be able to say "The middle east is a cough hole" and I should not have to justify any of it and people should not call me a bigot, a racist, prejudiced or whatever. I have my reasons and my reasons are more than justified and I do not have to justify them to anyone.

We all think differently. We are all entitled to an opinion. Just because you are more tolerant of certain things does not make you better or be able to judge. Far from it.

That is the result of the society and democracy we live in, and we are better for it.
That is your opinion. I do not think, not for one minute, that we are better for it.

All Jews are not Israeli and all Israelis are not Jews. So you claims of racism are false.

If you read the thread you will learn the origin of that discussion.

The first route I would like Qantas to do is a direct 787-900 from PER to LHR as this would prove very popular.

Even better if they have an Int connection to it on the trans-con from SYD or MEL, or if not build an F Lounge at PER ;)

The Arab world denies the existence of Israel, and as a result, will deny all Israeli citizens (spiritual home of Jewish people) right of entry in to their country. So how can state-sanctioned racism not be any more clear cut than this?

Hmmm, i do have an Israeli entry and exit stamp in my passport so will have to check this out if ever deciding to fly this route...

Although i transited back through Doha after having visited Israel and I don't recall in 2010 them raising any issues, so imagine it won't be a problem.. I only have so many more trips left on current passport before its full anyway, so maybe a moot point...

As for some points in this thread i don't think anyone is going to convince others to change their views...

In transit.. doubt it will matter. Entering the place is different. While my passport was not vetted by immigration, I believe some officers will flick through passports. Something to research...

The government of the UAE says there is no problem whatsoever with having Israeli immigration stamps/visas in your (non-Israeli) passport. The issue is that Israeli passports are a no go, because the UAE does not recognise Israel as a nation. Apart from the political issue involved, it also means therefore that the UAE does not recognise anyone travelling on an Israeli passport as having a valid travel document! A bit like turning up somewhere and trying to use your Hutt River Province passport, signed by Prince Leonard!

Rant over...

Goes back a long way...death threats that sort of thing. Ever lived next to a bad neighbour??

They should be made to go and live together somewhere.....

I am a little bit surprised the jew card was pulled out for something like this.

It should be noted Israeli spies have faked Australian, New Zealand, Britain, Ireland, France and Germany passports to assassinate some Hamas guy in Dubai.
Israeli spy agency Mossad regularly faked Australian passports: ex-agent

The OP might complain about who they let in, but Mossad is one of the most ruthless spy agencies in the world.

They even jailed a dual Aussie/Israeli passport holder who spied for them.
Zygier 'planned to expose deadly use of passports'

Like most people on this forum, I more worried the good standing of my Aussie passport.

All Jews? Surely not - as previously stated, there are more Jews living outside of Israel than inside, and as mentioned there are a number of faiths represented in Israel as well.. so effectively they are telling some Jews, as well as a few Christians, Muslims, Buddhists and others... to piss off..

No -

It doesn't amount to blatant racism, it's more a political issue than anything else. They aren't the only ones in the world who are anti Israeli Government/policies etc - in fact I would almost go as far to say outside the US, the majority of the free thinking world would be against some of the their policies as well.

The Arab world are entitled to recognise whoever they like. A lot of things have happened over that part of the world... Still not racist IMO, just political. Same as some people recognise Taiwan as a separate nation, some recognise it as part of China...
I think it has been made quite clear jews are more than welcome - passports from a place the arabs see as not a country are not.

However, according to Wikipedia - if an Israeli passport holder travels to one of nine nearby Arab states - Iran, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Libya, Sudan, Syria, Iraq, Yemen and the Gaza Strip, (be it on an Israeli Passport or other) they can be prosecuted when they get home to Israel... Would you consider that racist? I find that as ridiculous as the Yanks not allowing its citizens to travel to Cuba...
