Anyone been checked out early from hotel room/belongings removed from room?

Not a Swiss story:

I was once on holiday with my family on Hamilton Island. We were relaxing in our hotel room when the door suddenly opened and an old couple walked in with their luggage.

Turns out they were given our room at check in. I went downstairs with them to explain the situation. The reception staff were most apologetic.

In hindsight, I should have asked for a complimentary stay.
That actually once happened to me at an airport hotel in Zürich, Switzerland!!!

I’ve never come across that. I’ve always secured a late check out at the time of checking into the hotel.
Yes, same for me - unless the hotel is fully booked for arrivals on the day of checkout, in which case they may not be able to guarantee - THEN they may say to check again on the day of departure.

As a general rule I find that Marriott Bonvoy hotels offer late check out to those with eligible status upon checkin (either proactively or upon request), unless hotel running quite full or designated as a "resort" (which isn't eligible for late checkout). Never had a problem previously, when they've given it at check-in, which tends to suggest they have some sort of system that notifies housekeeping.

But that’s it, Marriott have a published late checkout benefit so they’re much more likely to grant it.

At Hilton, I find they focus on early checkin which I almost always get. But for late checkout, while they still grant them, in my experience they almost always tell you to come back the day of departure. Especially in the US, it’s not unusual for a hotel to be sold out on any given day.

Having said all that, the only time I’ve been outright declined a late checkout in recent years was at a Marriott (Four Points) but I don’t have elite status with them.

My experience exact opposite. Nearly always told to call down first thing in the morning and will be told if approved. Nowadays non statused in most chains.

My experience is that asking at check-in is better since they can block the room hours on your departure day.

With Hilton, the terms used to specifically state it must be requested on check in, but I note that is no more.

But remember, non-status guests have little to no right to expect/request a late checkout when checking in. It is typically a benefit that comes with status.

There is no late checkout benefit at Hilton. Benefits and Member Tiers with Hilton Honors

It has been completely removed from the program T&Cs.

It is briefly mentioned on another page - Benefit Details and Disclaimers - Hilton Honors - but that basically just says don’t help yourself to a late checkout, you have to ask for it and it’s subject to availability. Ie, SOP for any hotel.

One always had to ask for it.

But it is still there in the T&C's under "Hilton Honors Amenities for all Members, ..."

Note that with "World of Hyatt", 2pm or 4pm (depending on Tier) late check out is generally gauranteed for those with status above base level.

A Savvy front office manager knows the spread of check-in/arrival times, housekeeping load, etc, so it can usually be tuned to look after the elite and DYKWIA mob.
