Same. Never “day of”.I’ve never come across that. I’ve always secured a late check out at the time of checking into the hotel.

That actually once happened to me at an airport hotel in Zürich, Switzerland!!!Not a Swiss story:
I was once on holiday with my family on Hamilton Island. We were relaxing in our hotel room when the door suddenly opened and an old couple walked in with their luggage.
Turns out they were given our room at check in. I went downstairs with them to explain the situation. The reception staff were most apologetic.
In hindsight, I should have asked for a complimentary stay.
Yes, same for me - unless the hotel is fully booked for arrivals on the day of checkout, in which case they may not be able to guarantee - THEN they may say to check again on the day of departure.I’ve never come across that. As a general rule I find that Marriott Bonvoy hotels offer late check out to those with eligible status upon checkin (either proactively or upon request), unless hotel running quite full or designated as a "resort" (which isn't eligible for late checkout). Never had a problem previously, when they've given it at check-in, which tends to suggest they have some sort of system that notifies housekeeping.

My experience is that asking at check-in is better since they can block the room hours on your departure day.My experience exact opposite. Nearly always told to call down first thing in the morning and will be told if approved. Nowadays non statused in most chains.
But remember, non-status guests have little to no right to expect/request a late checkout when checking in. It is typically a benefit that comes with status. My experience is that asking at check-in is better since they can block the room hours on your departure day.
With Hilton, the terms used to specifically state it must be requested on check in, but I note that is no more.

One always had to ask for it.you have to ask for it and it’s subject to availability. Ie, SOP for any hotel.
