I received my letter today.
My entry-level card used to earn 1.25 points per dollar spent on the Amex (uncapped, I think) and 1 point per dollar spent on the Visa, up to $1,500, then 0.5 points per dollar thereafter. The new rates are 1 point per dollar spent on the Amex (up to $3,000) and 0.5 points per dollar spent on the Visa (up to $3,000).
I don't have an enormous spend, particularly compared to some, but have calculated, based on my previous 12 statements, that my yearly earn will drop from 32,300 points to 23,200 points, a reduction of 8,800 point per year (or 28%).
It is the changes to the earn rates, rather than the caps, that affect me most.
Time to explore some other options, perhaps.
In a small way, though, this is restoring the balance between spend earning (which increases with inflation) and flight earning (which remains constant, but for changes to the flight earning tables). I have previously commented on the problems posed by the two fundamentally different bases on which points can be earned and noted that program changes are periodically required to maintain balance and sustainability: see
