We had an interesting experience with the ANZ Plat Ins now underwritten by QBE. We recently had a JQ flight to OOL TYO cancelled on morning of departure due to the impending arrival of typhoon VongFong. Our experience trying to confirm another flight with One Star (now No Star) via the Philippine call centre was shambolic to say the least but that's another story.
Given that we were flying to TYO to join a cruise and the next available JQ flight had us arriving 5 hours after our cruise departed, I contacted QBE to ask what our options were. The conversation went like this:
1. Could we fly back to Sydney and get JL flight next day? Could we go to BNE and fly SQ BNE SIN TYO? The answer was that we had to accept the first available flight JQ offered.
2. But we will miss the cruise departure? Then QBE will cover costs of transfers to next port (Osaka).
3. But cruise line unsure until typhoon hits whether Osaka will still be on port list. Then QBE will cover cost of transfers to next port (Okinawa).
4. But cruise line also unsure whether Okinawa will still be on port list - next stop Taipei. Then QBE will cover cost of transfers to Taipei.
5. But this will mean missing 5 days of a 12 night cruise? Then QBE would probably consider the trip not worthwhile to continue and agree to refund the full cost of the trip but you would have to submit the claim and it would be assessed.
6. So we have to go to TYO on JQ's first available flight then see if we spend the next 5 days chasing a ship around Japan/Taiwan before QBE will consider us abandoning the trip, flying home, submitting a claim and then possibly having the claim denied? Yes
Fortunately we were able to get seats on an earlier JQ departure and arrived in time to meet the ship.
For years we have travelled under the ANZ Plat Ins and in 2010 we were caught in the Icelandic volcano drama which severely altered our travel plans and cost $$$ to get us from Stockholm to Paris by train. Travelled under ANZ policy then, insurer (Chartis) fantastic, submitted all claims once home and received payment within 10 days - no questions asked.
I'm still unsure whether I will travel under the QBE policy for our next trip.
