Apple Airtags

This may be of interest:

Apple Airtags did not perform very well.
The take away is car thief’s use Android…? 😁

But seriously, the main point of this thread was finding things not going away at high speed.

I used the Tiles on a RTW trip the last 2 months. Very underwhelmed - the coverage just isn't there sadly. Majority of airports didn't seem to have anyone else within range, so they only showed up on our apps when right next to us.

They are obviously more designed for attaching to keys and stuff. I was hoping it'd be more - here's where your things are, right now, overlaid on a map (which seems to be what the iThings do). But instead you have to mark your item as lost, and eventually you'll get a notification it's been picked up somewhere.

Unfortunately our bags were lost for over a week - so I used the free trial for premium. Was useful for knowing the bags never left SYD, but after that, no idea. They went 'not seen' for several days.

I was in the a bit cynical category but would have to say I was very impressed by my airtags on recent European trip. If anything they were too good, being reminded we had left them behind when we were 200m away was a bit over the top but I’d rather that than no warnings.

@blackcat20 Would you be able to shed some light on how the Samsung tags perform as a luggage tracker?
Many thanks!

I have been using them for the last month or so travelling through the US. Only scanned for them a handful of times (at airports), and were all located near instantly by the app.

Touch wood, haven't had to use them to actually find a missing bag yet, this was just for fun while sitting in lounges waiting for flights.
No missing bags, but tags have always shown up at the arrival airport.

I had Tiles also on my last trip. When my bag got stuck at LHR, I got frequent traces from there. This way I knew it was left behind from my connecting flight so there was no point in waiting at the baggage carousel. At one point, the bag changed terminals at LHR, too.
On my app, the traces are visible directly without the "mark item lost" function activated.

For fun, I've sometimes carried one with me when roaming around Sydney CBD and surroundings. Very sporadic traces. I wish Android world gets a tracker that's equally ubiquitous than Apple airTags seem to be. Though, perhaps I could help on my part by occasionally keeping the GPS & bluetooth activated in my own phone... 😁

I suspect it's more widespread in Europe. Was really quite useless in South America.

Huh wonder why my app doesn't show that ... I've got a pixel so maybe less functionality on that compared to others? No idea ... hopefully won't have to use it for a while, I'm back on a hand luggage policy now!

Coincidentally I have an older Pixel, too. Given there's zero bloatware, the apps should run as coded. Mine works a little too well because it keeps always complaining when I turn the GPS off...

My airtags worked brilliantly today following five pieces of luggage MEL-YLW - long one short, two AC flights cancelled due to weather, Bags checked from LAX to YLW, needed to retrieve in Domestic YVR, got four, but the hard ski case (oversized) went missing - airtags said still at International.

AC Luggage guys appreciated the tip, and it was all sorted.

Thanks for the info! I am tossing between Tile and Samsung tags .... the later seems limited to work with Samsung phones only.

Someone may need to correct me with the Samsung tags, but they will likely work utilising all modern samsung devices to help find them. Just like Apple airtags, use phones and ipads etc to help locate. Tile needs devices with the tile software installed, which can be both apple and android, although i imagine there will be less Apple/Tile users these days.
So if the Samsung tags work the same way apple airtags work, they may be better at finding stuff, given the prevalance of samsung devices in the world. That said I'm sure Tile have gained in popularity also

Tile does precisely this, im guessing you didn't have a subscription (free for first month, can then suspend and reactive next time you travel - I think maybe $6/month)?

When I was in EDI I could see my bags were still at LHR on the map. When I was in my Edinburgh hotel, I could see when bags had made it to EDI; and where they were in the city whilst being driven around by the courier.

I could also tell when bags were loaded on my flights.

I suspect so, but there would be plenty of material available. They also have a customer service HQ at Olympic Park In Sydney; they could answer all your queries.

Samsung (electronics) generally are more efficient devices than Apple (my subjective opinion), with Apple's design appeal (controversially) over function.

Therefore, your proposition that Samsung could work efficiently would be valid. Both Apple and Samsung sales have decreased with an impending consumer spending slowdown.

Found an interesting feature of the Apple AirTags when I was playing -The hard reset, harder than just removing the battery.

I removed the tags from my account which I have done before and want to reconnect to my account. Tags are telling me they are following me but I cannot re-add them to my FindMyIphone App. There is a procedure to reset the AirTag. Remove battery, reinsert (but don't lock yet) then press it 4 times. I had tried removing battery and reinserting in one process but that didn't actually reset the tag.

I did have the subscription, so then I blamed my Pixel but now I'm just not sure! I could never see my bags unless I reported them as lost - then got a million annoying notifications when they did come into range.

Sounding like a me problem more and more though :)

I appear to have lost my airpods - location shows at the hotel I stayed at in London last week but they said they hadn't found them.

Does anyone know how to get an email for a particular Hilton because I want to email them a photo of the last seen just in case they are found,

I've done the notify when found but just wondering if anyone knows how long they keep their charge? They had been charged just before I lost them

What hotel was it?
