I did research this a fair bit and I decided I was happy to:

Brendan Murphy said about a quarter of adults with a smartphone had downloaded the COVIDSafe App but he wanted that number increased to give leaders more confidence in easing coronavirus-imposed restrictions.

His comments come ahead of a National Cabinet meeting on Friday, in which leaders are slated to discuss restrictions that have been imposed for more than a month.

There have been no new cases in SA for 10 days in a row as of yesterday, and there were only a couple of new cases in the few days before that. According to SA Health, of the 7 currently active cases, 3 are in hospital (none in ICU). So that means 4 active cases in the community as of yesterday.

(Edited to update with info from SA Health press release of 2 May 2020.)
7 active cases in SA (including hospital) and 0 for some days in the ACT. However given both ACT and SA have had community transmission (albeit very low), I think it’s impossible to say if the virus is still active or not. SA is better off than ACT in that respect, as we still have open borders and with the lifting of restrictions it is now possible for ACT residents to visit family in NSW and vice versa, so I am expecting hot spots to happen.

There is no community transmission in the ACT.
There has been exactly 1 case of "local transmission" recorded in the ACT where they have been unable to track down how that person got infected.
This is what Health ACT said on that case
“In the other case under investigation, we have not been able to find a source of exposure and this will now be classified as the ACT's first case of local transmission from an unknown source.

“Because this is only one case, it does not mean we have community transmission in Canberra. It is an indicator though that there is the possibility for community transmission, which is why we need to continue with the great work we have been doing as a community to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in the ACT. Social distancing and good hand and respiratory hygiene have been critical in helping us lower our rate of infection to where it is now.

That was more then 2 weeks ago. Testing had been expanded before that and was again expanded after and nothing has been found. There is no evidence of community transmission in the ACT.

Yeah I know - I read their releases daily. They might have said that and certainly our one case is a really weird one, because he was virtually self isolating, but he does meet the definition of community transmission.

I.e. local infection of unknown origin. While I would obviously be very happy to think we have none, in my opinion it is still unknown. The best we can say is currently no further cases have been found in spite of increased testing. If I sound mistrustful, well you get that with age....

A decent balanced article.

I think the key thing to remember is the app is merely a tool that helps the contact tracing process, it's no means an absolute record.

In my situation I suspect I'll get tagged multiple times a week with my apartment neighbours, one of whom works in a hospital.

But I'm probably more at risk from the multiple heavy breathing joggers that pass by as I'm out walking, and the app won't track them.

Maybe it is time for those who have come to Australia from other countries for a new and safe life, to start giving back to the country that welcomed them, and download the app because if this app allows us to manage the virus and return to a new kind of normal economy then that's what the country needs and deserves.

Aren't you making big assumption about exactly who has not downloaded the app. IMO there are 2 categories of non-downloaders:
  1. The tinfoil hat brigade (for lack of a better term) - you won't change these peoples' minds
  2. Those who just can't be bothered - these people just need some encouragement - maybe endorsement from sports / media / entertainment, etc super stars
To suggest that migrants are opposed to the app is quite illogical - they often make "better" citizens than those self-entitled first fleeter's.

Nope, no assumptions. Although maybe you assume I'm a self entitled "first fleeter" 😉. If arrivals have already downloaded the app then kudos to them. Agree that a media from sports people or people who are seen by others to have some import might have an effect.

I'm not a "first fleeter" and have first generation arrivals (both subcontinent, South Africa and UK) in my immediate family and all of whom have downloaded the app.

Ah, so you basically categorise the non downloaders as stupid or a-holes. Not much judgment in that, is there?

I can’t imagine that people who were involved in the ‘robodebt’ issues would be all that keen on accepting government assurances about their IT. There are many people who have good reason not to be trusting of government. Just because you disagree with them, does not make them wrong.

If this app is a requirement for removing the lockdown, then it would be very easy to the government(s) to say so. Perhaps the issue is that the PM, who has made vague comments about that, actually does not have the power to do so. If we’re going to remain locked down, for whatever reason, then for the majority of us, the app is pointless. I could put it on my 90 year old mother’s phone, but as she hasn’t left the house in 8 weeks, why?

Look @Pushka - I fail to see how a humorous comment about first fleeter's could give you or anyone offence - you're the one who suggested it was migrants NOT downloading - I was trying to take a light-handed approach to calling out your post which seemed racist to me.

And @jb747 your comment about my considering non-downloaders either stupid or idiots (a-holes to you) was uncalled for. Again I was simply saying that some people "don't trust the government" or other "spy" agencies and no one will change their mind. And those who can't be bothered are the same ones who also can't be bothered keeping their distance while walking/running/biking or in supermarkets - it's just not on their radar screen - they need encouragement - I never said or even suggested they were idiots.

BTW - I have friends and acquaintances who fall into all categories of downloaders and non-downloaders - they are entitled to their opinions and we've have a few lively debates. Some of the objectors quite surprised me - e.g. they have never been impacted by other government IT mishaps (like the robodebt issue).

Well, you don't know my family so I'll leave the racist comment at just that.
