I did research this a fair bit and I decided I was happy to:

Just having location services on even with no app running definately does affect batetry life, I can go a couple of days without charging phone with locations services turned off, if they are on (even if no apps running) i have to charge daily. Either way Im letting the app mess with the work mobile and not risk degrading the performance of my personal phone. No need to have on all my devices - I have a personal mobile, personal 4G tablet and work phone n my bag whenever i head out these days.

That's because once you enable location services on a system level, any apps that can make use of it in the background are probably doing so now. Also on the operating system level.

You also probably do have apps running. Most Android apps are always running in the background (at various sleep levels). Even if you kill an app, there's a good chance it will just restart.

Not all Android BT apps require location services to be on - my tablet is Android and when I turn on BT to link my BT Headphones, it doesnt require location services to be turned on - so something poor in the programmingof the Covid-Sage app that it does require this.

That connection to your headphones is happening at the operating system level (or a system app). There is nothing "poor in the programming" (at least in relation to this app permission). I've already explained why the two are linked.

My main concern re ther app is its impact on battery life. Bluetooth and Location Services really drain battery life, I only turn BT or Location on when Im wanting to use my BT headphones (usually only on plane or commuting) or taking an Uber.

I had the battery fully charged when I initially installed the app. I had BT, wifi, and location services on. I turned all other apps off, and then left this running in the background for 12 hours. Battery was 84'% next time I looked at it. Battery life, at least for my iPhone 8, doesn't seem to be an issue.

Well my phone is mrsdrron's hand me down.it is old.have to recharge every day.but i have learn't how to check what apps use.COVIDSafe is at ~ 1%.

The US is considering going down the same path.

LOL. Getting so called "famous" people to encouragement would make it even less likely for some people to want to get it.
The only "famous" people I might give any time to considering any endorsement they might make of some government app aren't Australian and most don't use a conversational amount of English.
In NSW the former Fire Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons would be the perfect app salesperson. He would be the person with the highest public trust rating in NSW. Unfortunately the Prime Minister has a big trust deficit and I am sure it is having a detrimental impact on the app download rate.

A good choice, but exposure probably mainly limited to NSW, but it is the most populous state.

Pity I can't think of have obvious "national" hero/states(wo)man that the AU public implicitly trust.

I wont deny former Fire Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons is a good choice to promote this app... but a problem is that he is more well known to NSW people than other states... because the app is nationwide, that choice should be more widely known to all Australians overall...

I did say 'Ín NSW'. I wasn't proposing him nationally. Each state can have a different trusted person. A 'national' choice is tough - Peter Cosgrove?

I understood your response.. the problem is that the ad campaign would have been a national one.. that's why I said it might not be as good as stated... :) I agree Peter Cosgrove is a great national choice... or Professor Ian Frazer as a scientific spokesperson whom the nation respects :)

I think Peter Cosgrove. That would take away any of the anti vaxxers who might not trust Frazer so much.

Ardern is in power because of a deal with the Kiwi equivalent of our Hanson. She’s unlikely to get a second term. Using someone like her would have an effect on uptake, but it wouldn’t be in the way you want.

It’s interesting that I made the comment about this needing to be better sold, and we have everyone jumping to what amount to celebrity endorsements. I really don’t care which talking head is involved, it would simply result in my turning the page, or turning off. Talking heads historically are there to lie to us. Why listen to this one?

Perhaps a politician telling the truth, instead of muttering vague generalities is all we need. A simple statement of “when we get X%, we will immediately relax the lock-down”. Until they are prepared to say that, then you can be pretty sure that it isn’t true, and so if the lock-down isn’t to be relaxed immediately, then for many, perhaps most, there is no immediate rush to install anything.

And then what happens if we don't get X uptake? Are we going to hold the country to ransom because some refuse to download it? Or do we break that statement? No win situation if the strategy doesn't work.

If they can give me certainty that I will be able to go to Europe in October then I will download the app. Of course, that’s impossible. So I won’t be downloading the app.

Finally caught up on this thread.
Reading this thread makes me wonder how AFF would’ve debated the topic of the Australia Card from the ‘80s.... 🧨

Also makes me realize you really could program a Thread Generator, with the usual posts coming from the extremes of both sides, some general middle of the road folk, claims and counter claims, mis-interpretations and mis-representations. Perhaps Admin could right this program and save each of us some emotional heart ache 😆.

I probably sit in the quarter of ambivalence at the moment. I’m enjoying working from home and ain’t in a rush to have to attend the office right now. Sorry....!
