There’s quite a lot of deals ex-CGK (I’m in the middle of one to Europe on CX!).

AA/QR had some fares to JFK (and potentially other US east coast ports). Not sure if this is specifically still available but could be worth checking.

I did the CGK-JFK trip I June flying AA/QR. I did not get the QSuites and AA was just average. I found the $2.6k fare on Google Flights and Kayak but got error messages when I tried to book it on AA's website. I ended up calling AA to book through them but $3k was the best I could get after trying many different flight options.

For my upcoming trip, I need to be in NYC, Dubai and London so the ideal itinerary is Any Asian City - DXB - London - NYC - Any Asian City or flying the other way. RTW and Finnair/Lufthansa option is attractive as long as the fare is low enough.

I am too attached to OW so I was reluctant to fly ANA/UA but may give it a try next time for the US$500 difference and with the possibility of trying the ANA new J class seat.

Hi team. So sorry if I missed it but how do you book them great fares particularly the Finnair? I have been on the one world website and certainly didn’t see this fare. Your advice would be appreciated

When we did RTW pre-covid it could only be booked via a travel agent. We did ADL-SYD-SFO (QF), SFO-JFK (AA), JFK-HEL (AY), HEL-LHR (AY) then home LHR-SIN-SYD-ADL (QF) back then we had to go via HEL and SYD/BNE/MEL in the mix somewhere.

Is the article alluding that it may be cheaper to fly via Asia in both directions.

For example

Mel-Sing-Helsinki-New York-Helsinki-Asia-Mel

Would be great to the typical comparative costs or savings

I might be wrong, but Finnair gouges most passengers in *all* classes with significant seat selection fees, so the value of the ticket may need to be weighed against the additional seat costs (if applicable to this offer's booking class) for those of us who like to know where we're going to sit.

I've not experienced any fees in Business. Do you have experience with one of these bookings and having that issue? Is there some literature that you are referencing?
I've done at least four of them and I always go in and adjust seat selection after the booking has been made with the agent.

Yes, it often is a little bit cheaper to fly via Asia in both directions, even if you're going to the USA.

For example, you might expect to pay around $8,000 (give or take) to fly Australia-Asia-Helsinki-USA-Helsinki-Asia-Australia in Business, compared to Australia-USA-Helsinki-Asia-Australia for around $8,800.

It's a bit cheaper still if you just fly Australia-Asia-Helsinki-Asia-Australia.

That's about what I paid about 5 months ago for a AY ticket SYD-SIN-HEL-DUS open jaw VIE-HEL-MIA open jaw DFW-SYD for next Dec-Jan.

Don't forget you get an intra-Europe return flight from HEL (or 2 separate one-ways with an open jaw, as above) for no extra cost.

Why not? You are purchasing a valid ticket. The number of points will vary depending upon the class of travel chosen and paid for.

The “no points” thing is usually limited to hotels booked via online TAs and similar. Flights are normally fine - but as above, look closely at the booking fare class to see what it earns with the various FF programs. Especially Economy fares. Heavily discounted fares on partner flights can earn zip points / SCs. Usually not a problem in Y+ and up.
