It's 2024... why does QFF still have a joining fee and do people pay it?

Posted in wrong thread yesterday ……..,…,,……. It always amuses me that you need to pay to join QF FF - yes I am a member and have been like forever - did I pay to join? TBH I have NFI - but I have trouble getting my mind around the concept you have to pay to join an airline FF program.

What am I missing?

In addition to any revenue that Qantas may or may not get, I think there's a sales psychology angle. Interestingly, it work both ways.

On the one hand, if you get the fee waived it feels like you're getting a bargain, so - as Mr H points out - it makes a partner proposition more attractive.

On the other hand, if you do pay the joining fee you've invested actual money, so it acts as an incentive to keep engaging with the program so you can get your money's worth.

Mostly I think they have the joining fee in order to allow partners to waive it as an added incentive for signing up to their programmes. I doubt anyone ever pays it.
So QF are happy to sit back and have a joining fee where prospective customers say ‘Look at these pr*cks charging for something that should be free’ but are happy for their partners to offer ’Free to join QF FF’ and gain the goodwill?

You really think that?

Your post seems unnecessarily combative.

And, no, I doubt that any normal person is sitting fuming because Qantas charges a joining fee. I think most people who join QF know that it is easy to bypass the joining fee - either they are inspired to join by seeing a partner offer, or they wait until a partner offer comes along that looks suitable. I doubt they even question the fact that there is a joining fee.

If you want to vent your spleen at an archaic FF policy that actually does affect members, maybe you could look at the KrisFlyer program that you advertise in your avatar and its policy of hard expiry of points.

Free to join easy to burn - but I thought this was a QF FF thread? KF OT so if you want to vent your spleen about KF you should do so in appropriate thread 👍

So I wonder how many out there in general public land who are currently ‘non QF FF Members’ but who might consider joining ever stumble across a ‘free’ path to entry?

Vast majority would never read AFF - gen X or Y or whatever you call them would be all over it but the rest who would know?

I might do a week of research when I get back to MEL Mon nt 👍

I would imagine most adult Australians are already members, would once have been members or are active resistors. I doubt very many adult Australians suddenly get the notion to join FF - something will be the trigger. That might be having Woolworths pressing an Everyday Rewards card in your hand; it might be an offer for a credit card; it might be energy or insurance... Those people would join for free without ever even thinking about the joining fee. Even if you did want to join FF without being inspired by an offer, googling Join Qantas Frequent Flyer brings up plenty of links to do so for free.

I would guess Qantas has done market research and found that the joining fee is not a barrier, but waiving the joining fee can be an incentive - hence it stays. It's no different to gym joining fees that nobody actually pays.

I would suggest anyone confronting a $99.50 fee should 'google it', although the young 'uns these days would probably join this weeks favoured social media, find a group, and ask a question.....

My $99 worth

(Seeing I paid to join a long time ago after Golden Wings perished)

In the post Ansett times
There wasn’t so much a FOMO but remember when we used to pay to read the newspaper - paying to access content was what happened. You want it, you pay

QF have got the payTV Problem which is there’s no more subscribers who would pay per view so they must offer a “bargain”

Yes, there’s a fee but look what we can do for you. See, we are making an effort to attract the smaller flow of new members with a sign-on bonus, how good are we!
