A very good and helpful list, to which I would add TripIt (Pro) and XE for currencies. I think its major use of TripIt is to easily see any gaps in bookings (ie oops I haven't booked a hotel for a certain night) and to check on timings between activities.

Flighty paid is also my #1

I have Tripit Pro and so I'm wondering whether it's worth getting Flighty Pro as well, or whether Tripit Pro basically covers most of what Flighty Pro would cover. Alternatively should I ditch Tripit Pro if Flighty Pro is better?

If you had to choose one, I would definitely go Flighty Pro but they both are useful.

Is seats.aero really a substitute for expert flyer?

There are so many resources on EF like MCT, interline info, fare rules etc

Great list. Yes, many of my “go to” have or going down the virtual drain. I see that they’re still updating CMT, I must go check if it’s still cough. I’m going to wait until TripCase stops working before deleting the app!

WhereToCredit does not like QF post “Simpler & Fairer” (TM). So completely useless working out what a QFF might earn. Which does mean manually checking the QF earn tables if flying whY. The calculator is generally ok for higher fare classes.

eSIMs - I’m finding no one size fits all and it pays to check coverage, duration, data allowance and price. Flexiroam (and others) have the convenience of working of the one installed eSIM. Just add one or more Country, Regional or Global plan and it works out the best one to use. Unfortunately, outside of the regular sales, Flexi is pretty expensive (even after discount). At least all new phones support around 8 or more concurrent eSIMs - I have six at the moment (plus a local UK sim installed and amaysim on eSIM!).

Meanwhile, some others not already mentioned.

Seat Alerts (by ExpertFlyer) had a near death experience being pulled from the app stores and then stopped working properly but has since reappeared. For now, it’s still a handy phone app to check seat maps for free/blocked seats and set alerts (the Free EF account allows for 4x searches per day).

Rome2rio is great for exploring unfamiliar territory. Literally how do I get from A to B. It’s not infallible but a good starting point.

Moovit - local transport app with routes, planning tools and usually real-time info. If I’m spending time in a city, I usually look for the local travel app (some live on my phone - Tube map, London Buses), but Moovit covers many cities around the world. Handy if you forget to get the official app. Yes, Google maps does a lot of this also - unless you’re in China…

Mapway - consolidated a bunch of seperate city metro apps into one app. I just noticed that it includes Beijing and Shanghai - which should come in handy for an upcoming trip!

Maps.me - Apple and Google maps (both now allow offline maps) do most of the heavy lifting getting around, walking, driving and public transport but Maps.me is good for walking (and walking trails).

Atlas Obscura - quirky points of interest nearby.

I'm also not sure seats.aero is the substitute for expert flyer - what other apps give you availability by class like EF does? (all classes)

Matt, you mentioned Uber alternative like Didi here and overseas, and Grab in SE Asia, just wondering if you or any of the other contributors have found a good alternative to Uber/Taxis in Japan? It seems Japan is the hold-out for rip-off taxi fares, and we will be cruising there late March through most of April. I love Japan's rail , but the complexity of rail companies seems to result in no easy digital ticket when travelling in a multitude of locations.

A thorough list, with other good ideas being suggested too. This is exactly what I pay AFF to provide and a welcome break from credit card recommendations. Thanks.

Great article and recommendations. Thank you.

Would suggest adding Tripit Pro.
In addition to the basics, shows alternative when a flight is delayed or cancelled. It sends alerts before the airlines do even when sat in the lounge looking at the screens.
Used it out of London to Australia to find an alternative flight before the staff in the lounge knew there was a problem with the scheduled flight and then said there was no alternative until I showed the details on my phone screen from Tripit. They rebooked the flight before others informed belatedly headed to the desk.

It also has a points tracker for FF programs, hotels, car rentals and gives expiry reminders. Same for passports and other travel documents.

Best thing is it keeps whole itineraries in one place with bookings (flights, transport, hotels, restaurants, miscellaneous etc) added directly from emails or manually and can add documents, photos, notes, receipts etc.
Particularly useful to have it all in the Tripit app right there on the phone when there is no connectivity while travelling. Syncs with calendar so no need to re-enter there.

Quickly O/T sorry, this thread might be useful:

You just reminded me they are adding more features to the pro version such as travel guidance with help on Visas, health requirements for certain itineraries nationality is etc. I haven’t looked at in detail and I wouldn’t really trust it or rely on it but it’s good they are expanding the offering.

Love this feature of the TripIt app! Very helpfully - it recently showed me instantly that I'd booked accommodation for the wrong date in a long sequence of bookings for an upcoming 6 week trip. Important #phew moment!

eSIMs: everyone keeps saying esims are the way to go. We bought one before going to Costa Rica and were led to believe the activation process was quick and easy. We did ask neighbour kpc who said it could be fiddly. How wrong and frustrating for oldie dummies like us! When we arrived in CR, nothing worked - we were on whatsapp to airlo for hours and wasted hours. We gave up, forgo the cost, took an uber into town and got a physical sim - it worked like a charm for us, no hassle whatsoever. Maybe some day someone will teach us how to use esims 🙏🏻
