Or that Johnson can hit the cricket pitch with his deliveries. Such is life.

Slightly different. Johnson hadn't played test cricket for a year, hence no one really knew if he'd managed to resolve his problem with inconsistency. On the other hand, Anderson, Broad and Swann had been ever presents for England for a number of years, and literally up until a couple of months ago they were widely regarded as being among the best bowling attacks in test cricket. Anyway, I'll be happy if the SA attack suddenly becomes mediocre too!

I understand your point. Perhaps his confidence has returned. He is now averaging 28.30 which is extremely surprising considering he was averaging 31.00+ a few weeks ago.

South Africa, even without Kallis, will be a challenge. I could have it wrong but I strongly believe the batting line up is very fickle and not up to test standard. Lets not get carried away with the Ashes.

P.S Calling this English team atrocious is a compliment.

Got home today at 1600(God's country time:p),turned on the TV and it was over.
Third time we have won 5-0 but first time we have taken 100 English wickets in a 5 test series.
Seriously England just gave up.

I heard that stat on TV too, but I don't think it's correct. It's true that in 06-07 Aus didn't take 100 wickets as England declared while 6 down in the first innings in Adelaide. However, as far as I can tell, Aus took all 100 wickets during the 1920-21 series (according to the internet I mean, obviously I don't remember that one first hand!)

Wait a sec, I was forgetting about JW Hearne being absent hurt in both innings of the second test at the G!

Wouldn't have dreamed we were capable of 5-0 after recent years performances, but yes South Africa will no doubt be a much sterner test..

Our top order will need to do far better in SA, we can't rely on Haddin.

I seriously hope the selectors make some changes (Bailey looking at you)

New SCG stand is awesome.... even if only part finished.

Plenty of good stats from this Test series. Wasn't aware of Nathan Lyon, thanks TomVexille, better go and check his average now :D

Another stat.Brad Haddin only the second wicketkeeper to get 5 half centuries in a test series but the only one to have 5 from the first innings.

And to think they tried to cashier Haddin a few years back for a youth policy, wasn't that a raging success...

Still wouldn't mind having Mr Cricket back in the team as several of these top order batsmen looked decidely shakey and unable to turn it on consistently... While Clarke is not the problem, even he didn't have a great series like was it last summer when he ripped off a couple of double centuries and a triple??? But this top order lot can't all have one good innings each in 5 or 6 at bats...

Here's a pretty hopeless stat from this Ashes series which most likely won't suffice in South Africa and some action probably needs to be taken with either the order or the players... In their first innings [Australia], their average stand for the first wicket was 20, for the third 21.80, for the fourth 23.20 and for the fifth 23.80. The opening stands in the first innings were 12, 34, 13, 19 and 22. Warner has got to be much less hit and miss and Rogers as well...

If you can find Lyon's batting average for the series please advise (to the nearest integer) ... :p

Here's his batting and bowling stats, do you just add up all his batting scores since he didn't get out??? Which would be 60...

Does he have an average of 0 or no average? It's almost a moral question. :)
As far as I can tell it could be legitimatly represented by ∞.

Indeed. A strike rate of every 30 balls is very impressive and just about half his career average.

We are getting carried away again from one series against a demoralised team.

The simple fact is this demoralised team had Australia in trouble in the first innings at 5-140 or less on 4 occasions and 3-97 on the other occasion. Each time it was Brad Haddin with someone else that has resurrected the innings to a respectable total. The most likely reason this happened is the depth of the English bowling attack and the inability to enforce the huge advantage gained from ripping through the fickle Australian batting line up. And from there the Australian bowlers demolished the demoralised team.

Something tells me though that if Australia is languishing at 5-130 against South Africa they will not go on score 326 in all 3 tests. How will the Australian bowlers then cope with the pressure? Another thing to note is the wickets in South Africa are not as bouncy as Australia. Steyn, Philander and Morkel know how to bowl on them.

Just some thoughts. It will be an interesting series.

Agreed. Despite Johnson's heroic effort with the ball, I thought Haddin did more to change the momentum of games.

The top order, starting with Bailey needs to change.

We will need batters in form in South Africa
