Isn't it disturbing that a child's toy can in any way influence the auto pilot ;).

You'd expect such critical systems would be fully shielded. Do you think they consider this more in the newly designed aircraft?

Could such systems be susceptible to external EM interference?

The RF transmitter just happened to be a childs toy (as opposed to an adult's toy). Many devices are noisy.....

I think I recall that the 787 and A350 are the first 'shielded' airliners. There was not the slightest reason for this 20 years ago...and even the 777 is that old.

Could such systems be susceptible to external EM interference?

Perhaps....

But, we're informed earlier in the thread that Mythbusters thinks otherwise...so perhaps not.

I might add, airlines say 'navigation equipment', when they actually mean 'anything'.....

Hey JB, do they still have ID90s (or whatever the local term is) for staff, these days?

Just been booking tickets for the Big Trip next May. MEL-LHR-MEL, Prem. Eco and it's up around $13k!

Tried for standard eco, but the return flight is a code share with BA flying B744/QF B767 from SIN-MEL via half of the country, it seems.

If you have to pax it out of the country to pick up a flight, what happens if all seats are booked, as is the case for anything out of LHR for us.

Whilst it exists, all staff travel is virtually worthless. Your chance of actually getting anywhere is too low. I haven't used one of these fares for overseas travel in many years.

I've just gone to the qantas web site and made a dummy booking on the 9 (1/5/13) and back on the 10 (30/5/13), and the PE return fare is $6529. Where does the $13k come from? Business return on the same days is $11688, and first return is $14457.

Must travel...they find us seats.

I am assuming 2 x $6,529 = $13,058

Well that sucks balls and eliminates ANY chance of me booking a $8500 flight to fly with no bed.

I didn't know that it cost $8500 to go from Perth to Melbourne.

JB, any word on September flying, or not yet?

I'm on a blank line until the 23rd, so all that is scheduled at the moment is the US flight tomorrow, and a sim. Most likely I'll do a bunch of standby duties. Next roster doesn't come out until roughly the 17th.

This is now drifting well off the thread. I know you're all experts on points etc, but would prefer it if you kept it to another thread.

I have removed several off-topic posts above.

When my wife worked for Pan AM, it took her 3 days to get from JFK to MEL using IDxx tickets. All standby and many times had to vacate the seat for paying pax. But on one leg, SFO-MEL, she was "bumped" up to first class.

Two pax.

We'll wait til specials come out. Hopefully, it'll gel with your roster for at least one leg.

So, just watching FlightRadar24 as I often do and just was thinking how surreal it is for us aviation enthusiasts to have such access to the likes of a person who is in charge of flying these great machines around the planet.
Bon Voyage JB, hope this trip to LAX isn't to un-enjoyable for you and thanks again for your time and willingness to give those of us stuck behind a desk a little extra glimpse into your world on such a regular occurrence.

Do you think we should tell him that he's heading the wrong way to LA ;)

Maybe he is too used to operating QF9 instead of QF93 ...

JB on page 277 ( I think) there was discussion about kicking passengers off the flight and how the removal of bags makes this somewhat undesirable.

When a bag needs to be removed do you just put a request in and then sit and wait or are you able to get information about the estimated time of retrieval or similar and base your decision on that? I assume on aircraft with crates for all the baggage the rough location of bags in the plane is recorded.

Shortly after that we turned right and headed up towards Sydney..... Got to LA, so it must have worked out somehow.

Hadn't even made it to LA before I had a change to the pattern. Instead of bringing the 12 back, I'll now take the 94, arriving in Melbourne on Monday morning. Changes like that happen all the time, so you can never really plan much for a slip.
