Serious question, how would you rate your performance at his age or when you first got your command?

Well, I was over a decade older when I first got my command on an airliner. I was not as good as I thought I was...

But, I also had a background. I don't consider 'all rpt' to constitute one...

A flight for you all to add to the bucket list. 2 hours in a Cessna 172 from William Creek (on the Oodnadatta track) over Lake Eyre.

Very nice, where would your alternate be in that neighbourhood? :)

Sounds like a plan. Just have to convince the missus to take the trip to the Centre in the first place. Her idea of travel, when she has to travel, is a window seat in business...

Did you introduce yourself to the pilot as a professional driver, yourself?

Probably a view shared by many, but, people always have views about things that they have no experience of. There's plenty of good quality accommodation.....you'll just have to provide a business class car. Anyway, you meet plenty of blokes on 'boys' trips.

I met her the day before, and yes I did say I was a pilot. I also said I hadn't touched a light aircraft in 30 years.

Landcruiser GXL with a Jayco van would be the go, I think. I doubt that she'd want to do it in our i30 diesel...

I'm surprised that you have no interest in GA for recreation.

so as a reverse to the usual question, how would you go taking over the plane and landing it? :) No problems? :)

Prado is more common than the Land Cruiser....I'm using a Disco 4. Hired a Jayco once...bad experience.

Many of the guys are deeply involved in GA. As I came through the military, I was never involved, and the machinery holds no interest. Most of the warbird jets don't have live seats, so for me, that makes them a no go area.

Prado/Landcruiser mix here at work is roughly 50/50, I'd say. Both are highly capable vehicles. I was thinking Landcruiser mainly because it has a bit more space, but I s'pose with the two of us, and maybe the two Jack Russells, a Prado may suffice.

Pity about the Jayco experience. Maybe as it was a hire one it wasn't treated well?

Speaking of which, ever hear how SandyH is going? Is he still involved with HARS and the Connie?

It was brand new. I had a very good look at how it was put together, and if there is something worse than cheap and nasty, that would seem an appropriate description.

I think so. Last ran into him in Singapore about a year ago. One of the real gents of the industry.

He most certainly is. Met him in-flight on several occasions and always enjoys chatting about HARS. Shared several coffees with him at seat 4K somewhere between SYD and LAX once during his "break". Heard his name as the CSM introduced the crew and was hoping he would make his usual visit to the cabin, and ended up chatting for quite a long time. Hope he still managed some rest during his rest break.

I just watched Air Crash Investigation, which was focusing on KAL 8059. Would you say that any of the Asian airlines still have elements of the cultural/management issues that led to the crash? (Not questioning authority, etc)

I think that behaviour is spreading...

The increasing use of minimally qualified FOs, and management that has zero operational knowledge is quite a driver.
