ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

If you don't keep a close eye on this thread it really gets away from you! Something interesting I've learnt from catching up on my thread homework is points for child support. All these years wasted using birth control when I could have had umpteen little burrcos running around earning me points!

Does anyone know when js is going to return and collect his thread of the decade award?

I'm a little new to all of this so reading through this thread and others, which is the better card to use for ATO payments? I'm interested in warehousing the points and not a direct credit to QFF. Am I right in assuming an accidental overpayment to the ATO would result in a cheque refund?

deficit tax hey... well I guess its another 1,200 points per annum or so for the next 3 or 4 years...

I received 2 cheques to repay CC payments but I don't make a habit of it. The 150k plus additional points earned are being redeemed at 7 cents (based on retail prices).

Isn't a purchase defined as anything other than cash advances, fees and charges. I think there'd be a pretty good chance any payment to a merchant will be considered a purchase. Especially if it earns points.

have to say that my 2 over payments were genuine. one was my lack of reading the fine print, and the other the optus ATO site timed out on me the second. lots of expense this quarter with a warehouse relocation, our smallest BAS ever only just over 30K, and no personals as taxes now up to date

I did get the AA points from using US credit cards (Citi Executive point per dollar) at the ATO. You get about 7% less points due to the exchange rate on our short dollar and you have to handle the foreign exchange risk. This has softened the hit I took on Citi Select not paying on ATO suddenly last year.
Points cost 0.45 cents all up so far and AA points are more valuable than QF points.

Probably should only discuss this one offline/pm.

Why? Who is going to stop the practice? The ATO can't because they have made the taxpayer responsible for correctly fulfilling their tax obligations. The ATO can't do anything about overpaying if the taxpayer acted according to their best ability to honestly meet their obligations. If that means the taxpayer overpays as a result it demonstrates they are a good taxpayer.

If the credit card companies, that horse has already bolted, given the number that have reduced point earning for government payments.
